The best travel Pilates mat comes with a tradeoff. Most foldable travel mats are only 1.5 to 2 mm thick, and mat Pilates puts a lot of weight on your spine and knees. So first decide what matters more on this trip: the lightest possible pack, or more padding in a bulkier fold.
Quick answer: Flying with carry-on only? Get the Manduka eKO SuperLite (1.5 mm, 2.1 lb per Manduka). Driving, or doing a lot of rolling work? Get the 12 mm Stakt, which folds into a block.
One more thing up front: almost every "travel mat" is sold as a yoga mat. We couldn't find a foldable travel mat from a Pilates brand that we could verify was on sale. The picks below are mostly yoga travel mats, plus one thick folding mat and one rolled Pilates mat for road trips, sorted by how they pack, along with ways to add cushion once you arrive.
How we researched: We compared thickness, weight, folded size and materials from brand pages (Manduka, JadeYoga, Gaiam, Stakt) and cross-checked them against Treeline Review, NBC Select, Yahoo Health, Merrithew's mat guide and a search preview of Consumer Reports' travel-mat roundup (paywalled). We don't test products in-house. Where weights conflict between sources, we say so. Full sources are at the end.

The best travel Pilates mats
Best overall
1. Manduka eKO SuperLite Travel Yoga Mat 1.5mm
Treeline Review (Nina Pileggi, March 2025) named the eKO SuperLite its "Best Travel Mat." It said the mat "folds into handkerchief-sized squares, which means it can fit a carry-on suitcase or backpack," and is "surprisingly sticky" for how thin it is. Treeline also said it did better than Gaiam's folding mat. Its cons were price and minimal cushioning.
According to Manduka:
- Thickness: 1.5 mm
- Size: 71 x 24 in (standard) or 79 x 24 in (long)
- Weight: 2.1 lb standard, 2.3 lb long. Treeline lists 2.0 lb.
- Material: single-layer, closed-cell natural rubber
The Consumer Reports search preview we saw describes excellent floor grip and dry grip, quick drying and "minimal cushioning." Healthline also named it the best travel mat in 2021, with limited cushioning as the drawback.
It's natural rubber, and Treeline describes it as "99% latex free." If you have a latex allergy, choose the PVC Manduka PRO Travel or Gaiam instead.
Pros
- ✓ Treeline Review's top travel mat
- ✓ Folds small enough for a carry-on or backpack (Treeline)
- ✓ Good grip for its thickness (Treeline, Consumer Reports preview)
Cons
- ✗ Minimal cushioning for rolling and kneeling
- ✗ Natural rubber, a concern with latex allergy
- ✗ Pricier than the Gaiam
Best latex-free
2. Manduka PRO Travel Yoga Mat 2mm
The PRO Travel is the thin, foldable version of Manduka's PRO mat. It's our pick if you have a latex allergy: it's latex-free PVC with a closed-cell surface, and Manduka backs it with a lifetime guarantee.
According to Manduka's product page:
- Thickness: 2 mm
- Size: 71 x 24 in (standard) or 79 x 24 in (long)
- Weight: 2.9 lb standard, 3.3 lb long. Manduka's PRO comparison page still lists 2.4 and 2.64 lb, so the brand's own figures conflict. Plan on about 3 lb.
- Material: PVC "crafted in Germany," latex-free and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, with a closed-cell surface that "seals out moisture and bacteria" (brand claim)
- Packing: "Foldable and packable design fits easily in a tote, backpack, or carry-on" (brand claim)
Manduka says the mat "may feel slick if you're prone to sweat" and recommends pairing it with a hand towel. It also says to store the mat rolled, not folded, between trips. An older version of this mat was 2.5 mm, and some Amazon listings still show it, so check the thickness in the title.
We didn't find an independent review of this specific mat, so everything above comes from Manduka. That's why the eKO SuperLite, with more outside praise, ranks first.
Pros
- ✓ Latex-free PVC, a good fit for latex allergies
- ✓ Long size available
- ✓ Lifetime guarantee (brand)
Cons
- ✗ Heaviest of the thin mats here
- ✗ Brand says it can feel slick when sweaty
- ✗ No independent review found
Lightest natural-rubber mat
3. JadeYoga Voyager Mat (68 in)
If every ounce counts, the Voyager is the lightest pick here. JadeYoga lists it at "just over 1.5 pounds."
According to JadeYoga:
- Thickness: 1/16 in (about 1.6 mm)
- Size: 24 x 68 in, the only length it's sold in
- Material: natural rubber with no PVC, EVA or synthetic rubber, made in the USA
- Packing: "Folds up to about the size of a yoga block"
JadeYoga lists a few caveats:
- Folding leaves creases, which it says are "minimized by keeping your mat rolled when not traveling."
- The reinforcing scrim shows on the bottom.
- Natural rubber is "not intended for use outdoors and should not be exposed to sunlight," so it's not a beach or balcony mat.
- It may not suit a vigorous daily practice, per a search preview of JadeYoga's FAQ. We couldn't open that page to confirm.
Consumer Reports rated a "Jade Travel Mat," but we couldn't tell whether that was the Voyager or Jade's thicker 1/8 in travel mat, so we haven't applied that result here. If you want more padding from the same brand, look at that thicker Jade Travel Mat (just over 3 lb per a search preview; we didn't verify its specs).
Pros
- ✓ Lightest pick here
- ✓ Folds to about yoga-block size (brand)
- ✓ Made in the USA
Cons
- ✗ Creases when folded
- ✗ Natural rubber; keep out of sun and avoid with latex allergy
- ✗ 68 in only, shorter than the Manduka mats
Best budget
4. Gaiam Foldable Yoga Mat (2mm)
Gaiam's foldable mat is the cheapest pick, and it's the only thin mat here with a published folded size.
According to Gaiam:
- Thickness: 2 mm
- Size: 68 x 24 in, folding to "a 10" x 12" square"
- Weight: 3 lb on Gaiam's page. Its Amazon listing says 2 lb, so expect 2 to 3 lb depending on the source.
- Material: latex-free PVC
- Care: spot clean and dry flat. Gaiam says long sun exposure may degrade it.
Gaiam also backs it with a lifetime guarantee. Prints vary and are sold as separate listings, and some were out of stock on Gaiam's site when we checked.
Independent coverage is thin. Treeline Review mentions Gaiam's folding mat only to say the eKO SuperLite did better, without details.
Pros
- ✓ Lowest price tier here
- ✓ Latex-free PVC
- ✓ Folds to a 10 x 12 in square (brand)
Cons
- ✗ Treeline preferred the eKO SuperLite
- ✗ Weight differs between brand and Amazon
- ✗ Little independent review coverage
Most cushioned foldable
5. Stakt Mat
The Stakt isn't a thin travel mat. It's a 12 mm foam mat that folds into a block, and it's the closest thing here to Pilates-mat cushioning. It makes the most sense for road trips, checked bags or walking to a studio, not for squeezing into a carry-on.
According to Stakt:
- Thickness: 12 mm EVA foam blend
- Size: 69 x 24 in flat, folding to 12 x 3 x 24 in
- Weight: 3 lb
- Care: store it indoors and without the carry strap to avoid dents
NBC Select (Zoe Malin, January 2025) described it as five folding panels and said it was "easy to take with me to fitness classes since it's lightweight." She liked that you can fold panels to get "more cushioning under some part of my body." Her example was hip pain while lying on her side, when she folds in a panel or two for extra padding. Her cons were that the strap is "thin and on the flimsy side," the surface is "prone to scuffs and scratches," and it's "not ideal for heated workouts."
Yahoo Health praised the adjustable cushioning and easy storage but said it's "not as grippy as some mats" and is "more inclined to move around."
At 24 in across when folded, check it against your airline's carry-on size limits before you fly.
Pros
- ✓ 12 mm of cushion, far more than any thin mat
- ✓ Fold a panel for extra padding where you need it (NBC Select)
- ✓ 3 lb
Cons
- ✗ Bulky folded block
- ✗ Less grippy than some mats (Yahoo Health)
- ✗ Strap is flimsy and surface scuffs (NBC Select)
Best Pilates mat for road trips
6. Merrithew STOTT PILATES Pilates Express Mat
If you're driving, or walking to a studio, you don't need a mat that folds. This is the one pick here from a Pilates brand. To be clear, it rolls; it doesn't fold, so it won't pack into a suitcase like the mats above.
According to Merrithew's mat guide:
- Thickness: 10 mm
- Size: 72 x 24 in. The Amazon listing we checked shows 22 x 70 in, so confirm the size in the listing.
- Use: Merrithew calls it its "signature mat for all Pilates exercises."
- Weight: we didn't find a published figure.
Merrithew also warns that heavy mats can be "impractical to carry unless you are driving or have a locker," which is the case this pick covers.
Pros
- ✓ Made by a Pilates brand for Pilates (Merrithew)
- ✓ 10 mm of padding
- ✓ Lowest price tier of the thick mats here
Cons
- ✗ Rolls only; doesn't fold
- ✗ No published weight
- ✗ Amazon size differs from brand page
Also considered
- Yogo Ultralight 4.0: 1.7 mm natural rubber, 2.3 lb, folding to 12 x 2 x 4.5 in with attached straps, per Yogo. Yahoo Health said it "packs down to newspaper size" with excellent dry grip, but minimal cushioning and poor wet grip. Yogo's page showed it as sold out or backordered when we checked in October 2026.
- Liforme Travel Mat: 2 mm and about 3.5 lb with a travel bag, per a search preview of Liforme's FAQ. That makes it the heaviest of the thin mats. The Consumer Reports preview says it was slow to dry, with very good grip and "fair" cushioning.
- Metis Tri-Folding Mat: a 2 in thick folding mat. Yahoo Health called it "bulkier than traditional yoga mats," so it's a home or car option, not a packable one.
- Merrithew Folding Travel Mat: Merrithew's mat chart lists one, but marks it "Ideal for: All styles of yoga" and prints a thickness that doesn't add up. We couldn't confirm it's on sale, so we left it out.
Folding mats in the 4 to 6 mm range exist, but we couldn't verify specs from a brand page for any of them. If you see one, check the listing for thickness, folded size and material before you buy.
How to choose a travel mat for Pilates
Thickness vs. packability
According to Merrithew, Pilates mats "need to be the best combination of thick for cushioning, while still firm enough to provide support." Yoga practitioners often prefer thinner mats because "the thinner the mat, the greater that connection will be." Merrithew also warns that heavy mats, "like natural rubber mats, can be quite heavy and impractical to carry unless you are driving or have a locker."
Thin travel mats follow the yoga logic. Treeline Review, Yahoo Health and Consumer Reports (per a search preview) all list minimal cushioning as a drawback of the thinnest ones. For mostly standing work, a thin mat may be enough (our suggestion). If it's heavy on rolling and kneeling, plan to add cushion (below) or take the Stakt. For the full thickness debate, see Pilates mat vs. yoga mat.
Fold or roll
Tap the diagram to enlarge
Thin mats fold, but folding can leave creases. JadeYoga says creases are a natural result of folding the Voyager, and Manduka says to store the PRO Travel rolled. No source we found addresses creasing on the eKO SuperLite. A good habit: fold the mat for the trip, then store it rolled at home.
Material: PVC or natural rubber
- PVC (Manduka PRO Travel, Gaiam): latex-free, per both brands.
- Natural rubber (eKO SuperLite, Voyager): Treeline describes the eKO as "99% latex free," and JadeYoga says to keep the Voyager out of the sun. Skip these if you have a latex allergy.
- EVA foam (Stakt): NBC Select said it's not ideal for heated workouts.
Getting more cushion on the road
Thin mats can work as a layer. Liforme says its travel mat can be used as a topper over a studio mat (per a search preview of its FAQ). In a hotel room, folding a bath towel under your spine or knees for rolling and kneeling exercises is a simple fix (our suggestion, not a tested method). For a routine to do once you're there, see Pilates exercises at home for beginners. Many routines need only a towel; see our travel Pilates workout. With the Stakt, you can fold a panel or two over for extra padding, as NBC Select described.
Flying with your mat
TSA's "What Can I Bring?" entry for yoga mats lists them as allowed in both carry-on and checked bags (per a search preview; the officer has the final say). Carry-on size and personal-item limits are set by each airline, so check yours. A thin mat folded into your carry-on avoids the question of a separate item. A mat sling is another option, but per Manduka, its GO Play carrier doesn't fit the eKO SuperLite Travel or the older 2.5 mm PRO Travel. Our best Pilates bags guide covers other carriers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a travel yoga mat thick enough for Pilates?
It depends on the exercises. Most foldable travel mats are 1.5 to 2 mm thick, per Manduka, JadeYoga and Gaiam. Merrithew says Pilates mats need to be thick enough to cushion while staying firm, and Treeline Review, Yahoo Health and Consumer Reports (per a search preview) flag minimal cushioning as a drawback of thin travel mats. For rolling and kneeling work, layer a thin mat over a studio mat or a towel, or choose a thicker folding mat like the 12 mm Stakt.
Can I bring a Pilates or yoga mat on a plane?
TSA lists yoga mats as allowed in carry-on and checked bags, and the officer has the final say. Your airline sets carry-on size and item limits, so check before you go.
How thick should a travel Pilates mat be?
Most foldable travel mats are 1.5 to 2 mm, per Manduka, JadeYoga and Gaiam, while Merrithew's Pilates mats are 10 to 15 mm. A thin mat packs best but cushions little, so for rolling and kneeling work, add a towel underneath or choose a thicker folding mat like the 12 mm Stakt.
What is the lightest travel mat?
Of our picks, the JadeYoga Voyager ("just over 1.5 pounds," per JadeYoga) and the Manduka eKO SuperLite (2.1 lb standard, per Manduka) are the lightest.
Will a folding mat keep creases?
It can. JadeYoga says creases are a natural result of folding the Voyager and are minimized by storing it rolled. Manduka also says to store the PRO Travel rolled. No source we found addresses creasing on the eKO SuperLite.
Can I do Pilates on a hotel towel or carpet instead of a mat?
For standing and seated work, often yes (our suggestion). For rolling and kneeling, a towel alone gives little padding and can slide on hard floors. A thin travel mat on carpet or over a folded towel is a common compromise.
Is a foldable or a rollable mat better for travel?
Folding packs flatter into a suitcase. Rolling avoids creases. JadeYoga and Manduka both recommend storing thin travel mats rolled between trips.
Are travel mats latex-free?
Some are. The Manduka PRO Travel and Gaiam Foldable are latex-free PVC, per the brands. The eKO SuperLite and JadeYoga Voyager are natural rubber, and Treeline describes the eKO as "99% latex free." If you have a latex allergy, choose a PVC mat.
The verdict
Start with how you're traveling. Flying with carry-on only? Get the Manduka eKO SuperLite (1.5 mm, 2.1 lb per Manduka). Driving, or doing a lot of rolling work? Get the 12 mm Stakt, which folds into a block.
- Most travelers: Manduka eKO SuperLite, the travel mat with the most independent praise (Treeline Review's top travel mat).
- Latex allergy: Manduka PRO Travel, latex-free PVC that Manduka says fits in a carry-on.
- Lightest pack: JadeYoga Voyager, at "just over 1.5 pounds" per JadeYoga.
- Tight budget: Gaiam Foldable, which folds to a 10 x 12 in square.
- Road trips and studio walks: Stakt Mat, for 12 mm of cushion in a 3 lb fold.
- Pilates-specific padding, driving: Merrithew Pilates Express Mat, 10 mm per Merrithew.
