The best Pilates mat is usually thicker than a yoga mat. Mat Pilates puts you on your back and side for rolling and spine work, and Pilates Anytime says yoga-mat thickness may not cushion the spine enough for rolling exercises.
More padding isn't automatically better, though. Very soft or very thick mats can feel unstable. Thickness advice from named Pilates sources and brands ranges from about 3/8 inch to 1 inch, so there's no single "correct" number. The picks below cover that range, plus a firmer 6 mm option if you also do yoga.
How we chose:
- We compared published thickness, size, weight and material from Balanced Body, Merrithew, Manduka, Stakt, ProsourceFit and Retrospec.
- We cross-checked those specs against tester reports from Yahoo Health, NBC Select, Women's Health (via AOL) and Garage Gym Reviews, and against guidance from a Club Pilates master instructor (via NBC Select) and Pilates Anytime.
- We don't test products in-house. The two Merrithew mats are included on published specs alone. Where a spec couldn't be confirmed, we say so.

The best Pilates mats
Best Overall
1. Balanced Body EcoWise Pilates Mat
Balanced Body is one of the biggest names in Pilates equipment, and the EcoWise is its main Pilates mat. The brand says it strikes "a balance of cushioning with floor 'feel'," and describes a "proprietary grippy textured surface" that's easy to clean and contains "no latex, PVC, or chloride."
- Size: 72 x 23 x 3/8 in (183 x 58 x 1 cm), per Balanced Body
- Colors: purple and black
- Studio version: a hanging mat with grommets comes in the same size
Yahoo Health named it Best Cushioned and found it "especially supportive for rolling moves, side-lying leg work, and supine spine articulation." Its testers measured it at about ½ inch, a bit thicker than the 3/8 inch Balanced Body lists.
Their main con: "When wet, the surface can get slick, so it's not the best pick for hot or sweaty workouts." They also noted limited portability and a narrower width.
Balanced Body's page doesn't list the weight or the exact foam type, so we couldn't confirm either.
Pros
- ✓ Made by a Pilates-equipment brand
- ✓ Testers found it supportive for rolling and supine work
- ✓ Latex- and PVC-free, per the brand
Cons
- ✗ Slick when wet
- ✗ Narrower than most picks (23 in)
- ✗ Weight not published
Best Budget
2. ProsourceFit Extra Thick Yoga and Pilates Mat (1/2 in)
ProsourceFit's extra-thick mat is an inexpensive way to get real padding. It's made of high-density NBR foam that the brand calls "moisture-resistant," and it comes with a carrying sling.
- Size: 71 x 24 in
- Thickness and weight: ½ in (13 mm, 2.55 lb) or 1 in (25 mm, 4.5 lb), per ProsourceFit
- Warranty: the brand's page mentions a lifetime warranty, but the terms aren't shown on the product page
Yahoo Health named it Best Budget. Fitness expert Erica Walters told Yahoo it supports "her back and hips, making it perfect for yoga and Pilates." The trade-offs: the cushioning is "harder to use" for burpees and similar moves, and the grip "isn't the best," so the mat is "more inclined to move around on the floor." Yahoo's testers also said the ½ inch version "sometimes felt more like a pool floaty than a steady exercise mat."
Amazon has several ProsourceFit listings, and some show conflicting thicknesses. Check that you're buying the ½ inch or 1 inch version you want.
Pros
- ✓ Low price for the thickness
- ✓ Two thickness options
- ✓ Carrying sling included
Cons
- ✗ Soft foam can feel unstable
- ✗ Grip is weaker; mat can shift
- ✗ Amazon listings vary
Most Cushioned
3. Retrospec Solana Yoga Mat 1"
If you want the most padding, the Retrospec Solana gives you a full inch. NBC Select called it its top exercise-mat pick for Pilates in an older (January 2024) Pilates equipment guide.
- Size: 72 x 24 x 1 in
- Material: high-density foam with a "ribbed, slip-resistant surface," per Retrospec
- Extras: carrying strap and 13 colors
Retrospec lists the mat for "mat Pilates." Its page gives the weight as 1,814 g (about 4 lb), but some retail listings say 2.2 lb, so treat the weight as unconfirmed. Keep in mind that 1 inch is thicker than either named Pilates source suggests (about ½ inch from Pilates Anytime, about ¾ inch from a Club Pilates instructor). Pilates Anytime's mat guide warns that much thicker mats can make you feel like you're sinking.
Pros
- ✓ Thickest pick on this list
- ✓ Budget price
- ✓ Many colors
Cons
- ✗ Very thick foam can feel less stable
- ✗ Bulkier to roll and carry
- ✗ Weight figures conflict
Best Foldable
4. Stakt Mat
The Stakt Mat folds instead of rolling. Flat, it's 69 x 24 inches. Folded, it's a 12 x 24 x 3 inch block that tucks into a closet or under a bed. Stakt recommends it for "yoga, sculpt, pilates, HIIT and more" and says the folded mat doubles as a step, block or meditation seat.
- Thickness: 12 mm
- Weight: about 3 lb, per Stakt
- Material: EVA foam blend with a ribbed underside
What reviewers said:
- NBC Select (Zoe Malin, January 2025, about 18 months of near-daily use): praised the foldable panels, the "thick, supportive" feel and easy storage. Cons: scuffs from sneakers and moisture pooling, so it's not ideal for heated workouts.
- Yahoo Health: named it Most Versatile Folding, but said it's "not as grippy as some mats" and its light weight means it can move during active exercises.
- Women's Health: a contributor called it "a little cumbersome to transport."
A Stakt Mat Pro with a textured top layer for grip also exists. We couldn't confirm warranty terms on Stakt's product page.
Pros
- ✓ Folds into a compact block
- ✓ Firm-but-cushioned feel, per NBC Select
- ✓ Doubles as a step or block
Cons
- ✗ Less grippy; can shift
- ✗ Moisture pools on it
- ✗ Awkward to carry to class
Thickest From a Pilates Brand
5. Merrithew STOTT PILATES Deluxe Pilates Mat (15 mm)
Merrithew makes STOTT PILATES equipment, and at 15 mm its Deluxe mat is the thickest Pilates-brand mat among our main picks. Merrithew says its "durable, cushion construction is designed to protect your spine and soften hard surfaces."
- Size: 72 x 24 x 0.6 in (183 x 61 cm x 15 mm)
- Weight: 3.5 lb
- Material: closed-cell foam that rolls up
- Extras: graphite or midnight blue, a downloadable exercise guide, and a 30-day return policy for unused products
These are all Merrithew's specs. We didn't find a review from a major outlet, so this pick rests on published specs only. Merrithew also sells a larger Deluxe Grommet Mat for studios.
Pros
- ✓ Extra padding from a Pilates-equipment maker
- ✓ Closed-cell foam
- ✓ Exercise guide included
Cons
- ✗ No independent review found
- ✗ Heavier than the Express mat
Lightest for Class
6. Merrithew STOTT PILATES Pilates Express Mat
If you carry your mat to a studio, weight matters. Merrithew's Pilates Express Mat weighs 1.8 lb (810 g), the lightest published weight on this list. Built-in Velcro straps give it what Merrithew calls "roll-and-go portability."
- Size: 72 x 24 x 0.4 in (10 mm), per Merrithew
- Material: NBR closed-cell foam, "dual textured" with ribbed and flat sides
- Brand description: "super-cushy, lightweight"
As with the Deluxe, we found no major-outlet review, so this pick is based on Merrithew's specs. Amazon listings may show slightly different dimensions than the brand page, so check the listing before you buy.
Pros
- ✓ Lightest pick (1.8 lb)
- ✓ Built-in straps
- ✓ Two textures
Cons
- ✗ No independent review found
- ✗ Thinner than the 15 mm Deluxe
Best for Yoga and Pilates
7. Manduka PRO Yoga Mat 6mm
If you split your time between yoga and Pilates, a dense 6 mm mat is a firmer, grippier middle ground. The Manduka PRO is high-density, closed-cell PVC that the brand says offers "floor-like stability," backed by a lifetime guarantee (see Manduka's terms for what's covered).
- Sizes: 71 x 26 in standard (7.5 lb) and 85 x 26 in long (9.5 lb), per Manduka
- Thickness: 6 mm
Garage Gym Reviews named it Best for Yoga and describes it as "ideal for yoga, pilates, and bodyweight training." Its pros: two lengths, many colors and the lifetime warranty. Its cons: it's expensive and needs a break-in period. Pilates Anytime's mat guide also includes the Manduka PRO.
New PRO mats can feel slick at first. Manduka says this "resolves on its own with use." It no longer recommends salt scrubbing and suggests regular use and wiping the mat down after each session instead.
Pros
- ✓ Dense and stable
- ✓ Long size available
- ✓ Lifetime guarantee
Cons
- ✗ Thinner than dedicated Pilates mats
- ✗ Heaviest pick
- ✗ Slick until broken in
- ✗ Most expensive pick
Also considered
Balanced Body Aeromat (5/8 in): Balanced Body's thicker studio mat measures 72 x 23 x 5/8 in. It uses closed-cell foam with a "non-porous skin," and the brand calls it "particularly helpful for clients with sensitivity to touch." We couldn't confirm Amazon availability, so it doesn't get a full spot.
How to choose a Pilates mat
Thickness: about 3/8 inch to 1 inch for most mat work
There's no single right thickness, and named sources disagree:
- About ¾ inch: Club Pilates master instructor Vanessa Johnson told NBC Select that in Pilates you "often do exercises lying on your back, so you'll want to use a thick, supportive mat," and recommended one about three-quarters of an inch thick. That's from an older (2024) guide. NBC Select's own exercise-mat pick in that guide was the 1 inch Retrospec Solana.
- About ½ inch: Pilates Anytime's mat guide says "around a half-inch is a good thickness." It warns that much thicker mats can feel like you're sinking, while yoga-mat thickness may not cushion the spine enough for rolling exercises.
- Thinner Pilates mats: Balanced Body sells mats from 1/4 inch to 5/8 inch. It says its 1/4 inch mat "offers more 'feel' and less cushion" and its 3/8 inch EcoWise strikes a balance.
We didn't find any peer-reviewed research on mat thickness for Pilates. Treat thickness as a comfort choice, not an injury-prevention one.

Density and stability
Thickness alone doesn't tell you how a mat feels. Soft, open foam compresses more and can wobble. Yahoo Health's testers said a ½ inch ProsourceFit mat "sometimes felt more like a pool floaty than a steady exercise mat." Women's Health sources point both ways:
- More padding: trainer Tina Tang, CPT, flagged sensitive knees as a reason to go thicker. Winnie Yu, CSCS, said "something thicker can be better for offering a more cushioned and comfortable support."
- Less padding: Claudette Sariya, CPT, told Women's Health you might opt for thinner or denser padding to maintain better balance.
Dense closed-cell mats like the Manduka PRO and the Merrithew mats trade some cushion for a steadier surface.
Grip and sweat
Several picks have known grip quirks. Yahoo Health found the EcoWise slick when wet. Yahoo noted the Stakt can shift during active moves, and NBC Select found moisture pools on it. Manduka says new PRO mats start slick and break in with use. If you sweat a lot, a pair of Pilates grip socks can help your feet stay put.
Material and cleaning
- Latex and PVC: Balanced Body says the EcoWise contains "no latex, PVC, or chloride" and is easy to clean.
- PVC: the Manduka PRO is PVC, and Manduka recommends wiping it down after each session.
- Non-toxic labels: if this matters to you, look for brand-stated claims such as latex-, PVC- or phthalate-free, and check the product page for specifics. Balanced Body's EcoWise page is one example.
- Closed-cell foam: both Merrithew mats and Balanced Body's Aeromat use closed-cell foam, per the brands. Balanced Body says the Aeromat has a "non-porous skin."
Size and portability
Most picks are about 72 inches long and 23 to 24 inches wide. If you're tall, the Manduka PRO comes in an 85 inch length. Some brands also sell oversized floor mats for home studios. Those aren't covered here. Published weights range from 1.8 lb (Merrithew Express) to 7.5 lb (Manduka PRO standard). A rolled mat is easy to carry to class. A folding mat like the Stakt is easier to store in a small apartment but awkward to carry.

Pilates mat vs. yoga mat
You can do Pilates on a yoga mat, but standard yoga mats are thinner. Pilates Anytime says yoga-mat thickness may not cushion the spine enough for rolling exercises. For a full breakdown, see our Pilates mat vs. yoga mat guide. If you're deciding between mat classes and reformer work in the first place, see our reformer vs. mat Pilates comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions
How thick should a Pilates mat be?
Sources differ. A Club Pilates master instructor told NBC Select about ¾ inch. Pilates Anytime suggests around ½ inch and warns that much thicker mats can feel like you're sinking. Balanced Body's main Pilates mat is 3/8 inch.
Can I use a yoga mat for Pilates?
You can, but standard yoga mats are thinner. Pilates Anytime says yoga-mat thickness may not cushion the spine enough for rolling exercises. Garage Gym Reviews describes dense 6 mm mats like the Manduka PRO as suitable for both yoga and Pilates.
Is a thicker mat always better?
No. Claudette Sariya, CPT, told Women's Health that thinner or denser padding can help with balance. Yahoo Health's testers found a soft, thick foam mat could slide around and feel like a pool floaty.
Why does my new mat feel slippery?
Some closed-cell mats start out slick. Manduka says this resolves on its own with use. It no longer recommends salt scrubbing and suggests regular use and wiping the mat after each session. Yahoo Health's testers also found the EcoWise slick when wet.
What's the best Pilates mat for a small apartment?
A folding mat like the Stakt packs down to 12 x 24 x 3 inches, per the brand. NBC Select's reviewer named easy storage as a key pro.
Do I need a mat for reformer Pilates?
Not a floor mat like the ones above, since reformer work happens on the machine's carriage. Some brands sell separate reformer mats or carriage covers, which are a different product. See our [reformer vs. mat Pilates comparison](/reformer-vs-mat-pilates/).
The verdict
For most home mat work, the Balanced Body EcoWise is the best Pilates mat to start with. It's from a Pilates brand, and testers found it supportive for rolling and supine work. Pick something else if one of these fits you better:
- Tight budget: ProsourceFit (½ inch). Expect softer foam and weaker grip.
- Maximum padding: Retrospec Solana (1 inch), the thickest pick. Women's Health's trainer source flags sensitive knees as one reason to want more cushion.
- More padding from a Pilates brand: Merrithew Deluxe (15 mm).
- Small apartment: Stakt, which folds into a block.
- Carrying to class: Merrithew Express (1.8 lb).
- Yoga and Pilates: Manduka PRO 6 mm.
