The best Pilates towel depends on where you put it. A reformer towel is cut to fit the carriage, with a headrest cutout and a grippy back, so it sits over shared studio upholstery without sliding during footwork. A mat towel is a full-length yoga-style towel that lies on top of your mat and soaks up sweat, which matters most in hot or high-effort classes.
Buying the wrong type is the most common mistake. A 71 in mat towel is much longer than a reformer carriage, and reformer carriages themselves come in different sizes. Below are seven towels in three groups (reformer, mat and hand), plus what to check before you buy and how to wash a towel without killing its grip.
How we researched: We compared size, grip backing, materials and care rules from brand pages (Manduka, Salt & Honey, Balanced Body, Sfera, Gaiam) and cross-checked them against Treeline Review and Women's Health. We don't test products in-house. Where listings conflict, we say so. Full sources are at the end.

The best Pilates towels
Best reformer towels
Best reformer towel
1. Salt & Honey Non-Slip Pilates Reformer Towel
Salt & Honey calls this "The World's First Pilates Reformer Towel." It's also the only reformer towel we found sold by a major reformer maker: Balanced Body sells it (product code 16722) as "designed specifically for Balanced Body Studio Reformer." Peak Pilates has stocked it too, though it was listed as unavailable when we checked in October 2026.
According to Salt & Honey:
- Size: 30.5 x 23 in, covering the carriage and headrest (Balanced Body lists it as 30.5 in long by 23 in wide)
- Materials: microfiber top, rubber non-slip backing (Balanced Body Australia describes it as "non-slip eco-friendly rubber")
- Fit: the brand lists Balanced Body, Allegro, Align and Merrithew machines as compatible
- Grip: the brand says it "won't bunch or slide, even through footwork and jumpboard" (brand claim)
Care matters with a rubber back. Salt & Honey says to machine wash cold, tumble dry low or hang dry, and skip fabric softener and high heat. Balanced Body Australia adds that "some chemical cleaners, oils, and fragrances may damage your reformer towel." Salt & Honey doesn't say whether the rubber is natural or synthetic, so if you have a latex allergy, ask the brand first.
We found no independent reviews of this towel, so everything above comes from the brand and its retailers.
Pros
- ✓ Shaped to the carriage with a headrest cutout
- ✓ Sold by Balanced Body for its Studio Reformer
- ✓ Machine washable
Cons
- ✗ No independent reviews found
- ✗ Latex status of the rubber not stated
- ✗ Harsh cleaners, oils and fragrances can damage it
Best for sizing to your reformer
2. Sfera Fitness Pilates Non-Slip Reformer Mat Towel
Sfera Fitness is the only brand we found that sells its reformer towel in two sizes matched to different reformer frames. That's useful because carriages aren't all the same width or length.
According to Sfera:
- Compact (22 x 38.5 in): for classical and narrow frames such as Gratz, Pilates Designs, the Balanced Body Centerline and the Allegro Standard
- Wide (23 x 40.5 in): for the Balanced Body Studio, the Allegro 2, Stott (Merrithew) reformers and Peak
- Materials: faux-suede top, "black natural rubber" backing
- Care: don't put it in a dryer
The natural-rubber backing is worth noting. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, latex allergy is a reaction to proteins in natural rubber latex. If that applies to you, look at a silicone-backed towel instead. We couldn't find this towel on Amazon, so the link goes to Sfera's site.
Pros
- ✓ Two sizes for narrow and wide frames
- ✓ Brand names which reformers each size fits
- ✓ Rubber backing for grip
Cons
- ✗ Natural rubber, a concern with latex allergy
- ✗ No dryer
- ✗ Not found on Amazon
Best Pilates towel mats (yoga towels that work for Pilates)
Best mat towel
3. Manduka Yogitoes Hot Yoga Mat Towel
Treeline Review (March 2025) named the Yogitoes its "Best Yoga Towel" after comparing towels in room-temperature and heated classes. Its pros were that it "sticks to mat," comes in a "variety of colors," uses OEKO-TEX certified materials and is "quick to dry (for a towel)." Its main con was price. Women's Health also picked it, calling it "grippy and absorbent," and its editor said it resists odor if hung to dry between washes.
According to Manduka's product page and Treeline:
- Sizes: Standard 24 x 71 in, Long 24 x 79 in, Wide 26 x 71 in, Long & Wide 26 x 85 in
- Weight: about 1.0 lb (standard)
- Fabric: 30% recycled polyester, 60% polyester and 10% nylon (Manduka), OEKO-TEX certified (per Treeline)
- Grip: Manduka says the "textured surface activates grip as moisture builds, while patented silicone nubs on the underside anchor it securely to your mat" (brand claim)
Manduka suggests lightly misting the top side before class, with the nubs against the mat. Deeper colors "may require multiple, separate washings to remove excess dye," so wash it on its own the first few times.
Pros
- ✓ Treeline Review's top yoga towel
- ✓ Silicone nubs hold it on the mat
- ✓ Four sizes, including long and wide
Cons
- ✗ Highest price tier here
- ✗ Dark colors can bleed dye at first
- ✗ Needs a light mist for best grip
Simplest microfiber mat towel
4. Manduka eQua Hot Yoga Mat Towel
The eQua is Manduka's plain microfiber towel with no silicone nubs. Manduka says it "grips immediately on contact with sweat" (brand claim) and suggests lightly misting it before class. Its help center says to mist both sides, while the product page mentions only the top layer.
According to Manduka:
- Sizes: Standard 71 x 24 in, a wider 72 x 26.5 in, and Long 79 x 24 in (the size selector labels the 26.5 in size as 79 in long, so check the length when you order)
- Weight: about 1.0 lb (standard)
- Fabric: "ultra-soft microfiber," machine washable
Only Manduka's own pages describe this towel, and we didn't find independent reviews, so treat the grip claim as the brand's.
Pros
- ✓ Machine washable
- ✓ Long sizes available
- ✓ Lower price tier than the Yogitoes
Cons
- ✗ No silicone backing
- ✗ Needs misting to grip
- ✗ No independent reviews found
Best for hot Pilates on a budget
5. Shandali Stickyfiber Hot Yoga Towel
If you want silicone grip for less, Women's Health included the Shandali Stickyfiber and called its sweat absorption "excellent." It has a silicone web backing. An instructor quoted by Women's Health said it's too thin to use on its own and should go over a mat, which is how you'd use it in Pilates anyway.
According to its Amazon listing (search preview only):
- Size: 72 x 24 in
- Fabric: microfiber with a silicone-dot "web-grip" bottom
- Brand claim: "5X less slipping"
Retail listings disagree on whether it's machine or hand wash, so we couldn't confirm the care instructions. Check the label on the towel you receive.
Pros
- ✓ Silicone backing at a lower price tier
- ✓ "Excellent" sweat absorption (Women's Health)
Cons
- ✗ Too thin to use without a mat
- ✗ Care instructions unverified
- ✗ Specs come from listing previews
Best budget towel for a standard mat
6. Gaiam Stay-Put Yoga Mat Towel
The Stay-Put skips silicone and uses four corner pockets that slip over the ends of your mat. Women's Health picked a Gaiam microfiber towel with corner pockets as its budget option, noting it "absorbs twice as much sweat as cotton" but lacks silicone grip.
According to a retailer listing:
- Size: 26 x 70 in, made to fit standard 24 x 68 in mats
- Fabric: 88% polyester, 12% polyamide
- Absorbency: about twice as much as cotton and dries in about half the time (a brand claim repeated by the retailer)
The pockets are sized for a 24 x 68 in mat. Many Pilates mats are thicker or longer than that, and we couldn't confirm how well the pockets fit them, so check your mat's size first. Our best Pilates mats guide lists dimensions.
Pros
- ✓ Lowest price tier here
- ✓ Corner pockets keep it on the mat
- ✓ Absorbent microfiber
Cons
- ✗ No silicone grip
- ✗ Fit on thick or long Pilates mats unverified

7. Manduka Yogitoes Hot Yoga Hand Towel
A small towel is handy for wiping your face between series or for padding under your knees. Manduka's Yogitoes Hand Towel is 16 x 24 in, weighs about 0.5 lb and has the same silicone nubs as the full mat towel. Manduka says it adds "comfort under knees, hands, or wherever extra traction is needed." Care is the same as the mat towel.
Merrithew also sells a "lightweight and quick-drying" Conditioning Towel for wiping sweat, but it doesn't list a size or material, so we left it out.
Pros
- ✓ Silicone nubs keep it in place under hands or knees
- ✓ Light enough for any gym bag
Cons
- ✗ Small, so it won't cover a carriage or mat
Also considered
- Echome Pilates Reformer Mat Towel with Shoulders: Amazon listing previews describe a 38 x 22 in towel with a 1 mm microfiber-suede top. They disagree on the backing: some say tree rubber, another says silicone. We couldn't open the listing to confirm, so the specs and backing are unverified, and we found no independent reviews.
- Bala The Reformer Towel: sold out in every color on Bala's site, with no dimensions listed.
- Bala The Play Mat Towel and Stakt The Mat Towel: both brands describe grippy, absorbent mat towels with silicone grips. Bala lists its towel at 71⅜ x 26½ in, and Stakt says its 24 x 69 in towel is made to fit its own mats. We found no independent reviews of either, so we left them out of the picks.
- Lululemon Yoga Mat Towel: a Women's Health pick, but we couldn't verify its specs on Lululemon's site and it isn't sold on Amazon.
How to choose a Pilates towel
Reformer towel or mat towel?
Pick by class type. Reformer class: a carriage-shaped towel (about 22–23 in wide; sizes below). Mat class or hot Pilates: a full-length mat towel, about 24 x 71 in (per Manduka), which is far too long for a carriage.
Tap the diagram to enlarge
If you also do yoga on the same mat, see Pilates mat vs yoga mat.
Measure your carriage first
Reformers vary. Sfera's two sizes show the split: a compact 22 x 38.5 in towel for narrow or classical frames like the Allegro Standard and Centerline, and a wide 23 x 40.5 in towel for the Balanced Body Studio, Allegro 2, Merrithew and Peak. Salt & Honey lists its towel as 30.5 x 23 in and says it covers the carriage plus headrest. Balanced Body lists it as 30.5 in long by 23 in wide. Measure both the length and width of your carriage and headrest before buying. If you have a reformer at home, our home reformer guide covers the main models.
Budget Amazon reformer towels and shoulder-block covers
What you'll see when you search for a reformer towel:
- A carriage towel on its own
- A carriage towel plus two shoulder-block covers
- A bundle with grip socks and a bag
Many of these come from lesser-known brands, and their listings can contradict themselves. Echome's listing previews, for example, disagree on whether the backing is rubber or silicone (see "Also considered"), so confirm the backing with the seller if you have a latex allergy. Whatever you buy, compare the listed size with your carriage and headrest.
Grip backing: silicone, rubber, corner pockets or none
Tap the diagram to enlarge
- Silicone nubs or web (Yogitoes, Shandali): grip the mat underneath.
- Rubber sheet (Salt & Honey, Sfera): grips the carriage upholstery. Sfera uses natural rubber, and Salt & Honey doesn't say. Per the ACAAI, latex allergy is a reaction to natural rubber latex proteins, so check with the brand if that's a concern.
- Corner pockets (Gaiam): hold the towel on by the ends of the mat.
- Plain microfiber (eQua): grips once damp. Manduka suggests misting it before class.
Care: what kills grip
Manduka says to wash cold with like colors, tumble dry low or hang dry, and never bleach. Dryer sheets, fabric softener and detergents with softener "will make the surface… slick," and warm water or heat may shrink the towel. Salt & Honey gives similar advice for its reformer towel, and Sfera says no dryer at all. Wash dark towels separately the first few times because of dye.
Do you need one at all?
Check your studio's rules. Grip socks are often required: ASU Fitness, for example, says "grip socks are required to use the reformers and you will be asked to leave if you do not have them." (See do you need grip socks for Pilates? and our best Pilates grip socks.) Towel policies vary, and we found no authoritative source on them. A personal towel mainly adds comfort and a grippy, absorbent layer. We found no research showing it lowers infection risk on shared equipment, so treat claims like "protection from germs" as seller marketing. For what else to bring, see our first reformer class guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need a towel for reformer Pilates?
It depends on the studio. Some require grip socks (ASU Fitness says you'll be asked to leave without them), but we found no authoritative source on towel rules, so check with your studio. A carriage towel adds a grippy, absorbent layer over shared upholstery.
Can I use a yoga mat towel on a reformer?
It's not ideal: a full-length mat towel is about 24 x 71 in (per Manduka), much longer than a reformer carriage. A carriage-shaped towel is cut for the job; see the size section above to match one to your reformer.
What size is a reformer towel?
Carriage towels we found run about 22 to 23 in by 30.5 to 40.5 in. Salt & Honey lists 30.5 x 23 in. Sfera sells a compact 22 x 38.5 in size for narrow and classical frames and a wide 23 x 40.5 in size for the Balanced Body Studio, Allegro 2, Merrithew and Peak. Measure your carriage and headrest first.
Can I use a regular towel for Pilates?
You can, but a regular towel has no grip backing. Salt & Honey, which sells reformer towels, says a bath towel is a plain rectangle with no backing that "bunches and shifts" during class, while its own towel has a rubber back that grips the carriage. That's a seller's comparison. For mat work, towels like Manduka's Yogitoes use silicone nubs, and Gaiam's Stay-Put uses corner pockets, to stay in place.
What is a Pilates towel mat?
Usually a full-length mat towel (about 24 x 71 in, per Manduka) that lies on top of your mat. It isn't a mat by itself. An instructor quoted by Women's Health said thin towels like the Shandali should go over a mat, not replace one. If you want one product that does both, see our best Pilates mats guide.
Why is my yoga towel slippery?
Microfiber towels like Manduka's eQua and Yogitoes are designed to grip as they get damp, and Manduka suggests misting them before class. Fabric softener and dryer sheets make the surface slick, so leave them out of the wash.
How do you wash a Pilates towel?
Manduka says to wash cold with like colors, tumble dry low or hang dry, not to bleach, and to skip softeners. Wash dark colors separately at first because of dye. Salt & Honey also says cold wash, low heat or hang dry, and no softener. Sfera says no dryer.
Are reformer towels latex-free?
It varies. Sfera uses natural rubber, and according to the ACAAI, latex allergy is a reaction to natural rubber latex proteins. Salt & Honey lists only "rubber." If you have a latex allergy, confirm with the brand or choose a silicone-backed towel.
The verdict
- Reformer class: Salt & Honey, the towel Balanced Body sells for its Studio Reformer.
- Narrow or classical reformer: Sfera, in two frame-matched sizes.
- Mat or hot Pilates: Manduka Yogitoes (Treeline Review's top yoga towel and a Women's Health pick).
- Hot Pilates on a budget: Shandali Stickyfiber (silicone web; Women's Health called its sweat absorption "excellent").
- Standard 24 x 68 in mat on a budget: Gaiam Stay-Put.
- Just something to wipe off with: Yogitoes hand towel.
