Toeless (or open-toe) grip socks leave your toes bare, so you can feel the mat or footbar with them. They come in two styles. Open-front socks end before the toes, usually with straps over the top of the foot. Half-toe socks give each toe its own sleeve that stops partway, so the tips are bare.
Our top picks for the best toeless grip socks: the Gaiam Grippy Toeless (open front), the ToeSox Half Toe Low Rise (half toe) and the PIGA PigaLite (larger feet).

Before you buy, know that experts disagree on this category. NBC Select's Pilates experts advise against toeless socks that "separate your toes but don't cover them," because "they're not as hygienic and defeat the purpose of wearing Pilates socks." Garage Gym Reviews (GGR) suggests checking with your instructor first if you take in-person classes. If your studio requires closed-toe socks, our best Pilates grip socks guide is a better place to start.
How we chose: We compared brand specs (grip coverage, sizes, fabric, strap design) and cross-checked them against Garage Gym Reviews, Yahoo Health and NBC Select, which interviewed Bekah Kilinski of Form50 and Saba Alavi-Parham of Fuse Pilates. We also read a 2023 scoping review on five-toed socks. We don't test products in-house. Only two of these picks have an outlet review. For the others, we say when we're relying on brand specs alone.

The best toeless (open-toe) grip socks
Best Open Front
1. Gaiam Grippy Studio Toeless Yoga Socks
Garage Gym Reviews named Gaiam's Grippy Studio Toeless socks its "Best Toeless" pick and gave them a "moderate" 3.5 out of 5 overall (4.5 out of 5 for workout performance). GGR's tester said: "The ability to have your toes exposed and gripping the floor (or your yoga mat) made me feel more grounded than other socks I tried. I think it may even offer a better grip, too." That's one reviewer's impression, not a measured result.
Who What Wear also named a Gaiam toeless sock its best toeless grip sock, but noted that people with sensitive feet may find it uncomfortable. Its link goes to a different Amazon listing with more colors, so it may not be the exact same model.
- Design: open toe with cross straps over the top of the foot, silicone grips (per GGR)
- Material: polyester and spandex
- Size: one size, women's 5–10 / men's 4–9
- Care: machine wash and dry, per GGR
GGR's pros were the low price and that customers like the look. At the time of its review, GGR listed a single color and the size limit as cons. It also notes that customer reviews found the socks hard to put on and take off, and said the design cut off circulation around the toes.
Pros
- ✓ Lowest price tier here
- ✓ GGR's best toeless pick
- ✓ Open front, no toe sleeves
Cons
- ✗ One size, up to women's 10 / men's 9
- ✗ Customer reviews cited by GGR say the design cut off circulation around the toes
- ✗ Hard to put on and take off, per customer reviews cited by GGR
Best Half Toe
2. ToeSox Half Toe Low Rise
Yahoo Health named the ToeSox Half Toe Low Rise its "Best open-toe" sock. Five editors tested 16 pairs for that roundup, and Yahoo suggests this sock for mat Pilates or anyone who wants a more barefoot feel.
- Design: five-toe half toe, raised heel tab, arch support band, fitted heel (per ToeSox)
- Material: 77% organic cotton (GOTS-certified), 19% polyester, 2% elastane, 2% elastodiene, per ToeSox
- Sizes: XS (3–5.5), S (6–8), M (8.5–10.5), L (11–13) on the brand page. Yahoo lists an XL, but we couldn't confirm it with ToeSox.
Yahoo's pros were "Surprisingly comfortable for a toe sock," "Zero uncomfortable seams," "Strong grip on the mat" and "Open-toe breathability." Its cons are worth reading closely. The grip "stops short of the back of the heel," the sock "slipped during certain reformer moves like scooters," and the tester saw "quite a bit of fraying around the toes after machine-washing them only twice."
Our price tier reflects the regular brand-site price. ToeSox had it marked down as a final-sale item when we checked, so you may find it cheaper for now.
Pros
- ✓ Yahoo Health's best open-toe pick
- ✓ Mostly organic cotton
- ✓ Sizes up to 13
Cons
- ✗ Yahoo saw fraying after two washes
- ✗ Slipped on some reformer moves, per Yahoo
- ✗ Grip stops short of the back of the heel
Best Strappy (Ballet Look)
3. ToeSox Half Toe Bellarina Grip Socks
The Bellarina is ToeSox's half-toe sock with a Mary Jane-style strap. We didn't find an outlet review we could open, so everything here comes from ToeSox's product page.
- Design: five-toe half toe, Mary Jane strap with cutouts, raised heel tab, arch band, fitted heel
- Material: 80% organic cotton (GOTS), 16% polyester, 4% elastane
- Sizes: XS (3–5.5), S (6–8), M (8.5–10.5), L (11–13)
- Care: machine wash inside out on gentle, line dry or low heat, no bleach or ironing
The strap complaints GGR passed along were about Gaiam's open-front design, not this sock. Still, check how a strap sits on your foot if straps have bothered you before.
Pros
- ✓ Ballet-style strap
- ✓ Same XS–L size range as the Low Rise
- ✓ Mostly organic cotton
Cons
- ✗ No outlet review found
- ✗ Same half-toe style NBC Select's experts advise against
Most Grip Coverage (Brand Claim)
4. Pointe Studio Basal Toeless Full Foot Grip Sock
Pointe Studio describes the Basal Toeless Full Foot Grip Sock as having an "Open 5-Toe Design" that "allows your toes to spread, breathe, and grip," with "All-over PVC grip." Both are brand claims. We didn't find an outlet review of this style.
- Material: 83% cotton, 15% nylon, 2% spandex, with combed cotton, a cushioned terry footbed and a padded ankle rest (per Pointe Studio)
- Sizes: the size chart lists S/M (5–7), M/L (8–10) and L/XL (11–13), but only S/M and M/L were offered on the Black page when we checked
- Care: wash inside out on a warm, delicate cycle; line dry or low heat
Full-sole grip matters. GGR says "a full-foot of silicone grippers works the best." Stock moves around. When we checked Pointe Studio's store on October 7, 2026, the Black colorway was in stock in S/M and M/L, and the Sand colorway was sold out. If Black sells out too, Pointe Studio's toeless collection also includes the Mia Toeless Ankle and Cameron Toeless Full Foot.
Pros
- ✓ All-over grip (brand claim)
- ✓ Cushioned footbed
- ✓ Padded ankle rest
Cons
- ✗ No outlet review found
- ✗ We couldn't confirm an Amazon listing for this style
- ✗ Sand sold out and no L/XL offered when we checked
Best for More Ankle Coverage
5. Injinji x Pointe Studio Grip Toeless Mini-Crew
Injinji made this toeless sock with Pointe Studio. It's the only mini-crew height on this list, so it suits readers who want bare toes but more fabric around the ankle. No outlet review was available, so these specs come from Injinji.
- Design: exposed toe sleeves, "a comprehensive silicon grip underfoot," arch support
- Material: 83% cotton (combed), 15% nylon, 2% spandex
- Sizes: S/M (M 5–6.5 / W 5–7.5), M/L (M 7–9.5 / W 8–10), L/XL (M 10–11 / W 10.5–12)
Pros
- ✓ Mini-crew height covers the ankle
- ✓ Men's and women's sizes listed
- ✓ Silicone grip underfoot
Cons
- ✗ No outlet review found
- ✗ Largest size stops at women's 12 / men's 11
- ✗ We couldn't confirm an Amazon listing
Best for Larger Feet
6. PIGA PigaLite Toeless Grip Socks
PIGA's PigaLite leaves both the toes and the heel open. It's an open-front style with no toe sleeves, and it comes in the widest unisex size range here.
- Design: open toe and open heel, spandex compression, arch compression band, non-skid silicone sole (per PIGA)
- Sizes: unisex S to XXL, covering roughly women's US 5–11.5 and men's US 7–12.5. PIGA says to size up for wide feet and down for narrow feet.
- Care: machine washable
PIGA prices the sock in Canadian dollars, so our price tier is approximate. We didn't find an outlet review.
Pros
- ✓ Unisex sizes up to XXL
- ✓ Open front with no toe sleeves
- ✓ Sizing advice for wide and narrow feet
Cons
- ✗ No outlet review found
- ✗ Open heel means no heel coverage
- ✗ Priced in CAD on the brand site
Also consider
- ToeSox Half Toe Elle. It has crisscross elastics and comes in S (6–8), M (8.5–10.5) and L (11–13), per ToeSox. It sits in the $20+ price tier. The Quality Edit featured it for its "criss-cross ballet shoe inspired elastic."
- Tucketts Allegro. An open-toe anklet in the $10–20 tier, sold in S/M and L/XL. Tucketts says its "patented toeless design lets your toes spread and grip the floor," with an "anti-slip sole and arch-supporting band." Those are brand claims. We couldn't find a patent number or an outlet review. The brand site also sells 2- and 3-packs.
Toeless vs. full-toe grip socks
Toeless grip socks leave your toes bare for more floor feel and airflow. Full-toe grip socks cover your toes, usually grip from toe to heel, and are accepted at more studios, which is why NBC Select's experts prefer them.
Tap the diagram to enlarge
| Factor | Toeless | Full toe |
|---|---|---|
| Toe contact | Bare toes touch the mat | Fabric over toes |
| Studio rules | May not be allowed | Widely accepted |
| Expert view | NBC experts advise against half toe | No NBC warning |
| Putting on | Straps can be hard (Gaiam, per GGR) | No toe straps |
Fuse Pilates owner Saba Alavi-Parham told NBC Select that some socks only have grips in the middle of the foot, but the best ones have grips "covered from the toes to the heel for safety and to prevent slipping when moving." None of NBC's eight picks is toeless. GGR is more open to the style, but it notes that "many studios have students wear socks for health and hygiene reasons, not just traction."
What about balance? Brands say toe-separating designs let toes spread naturally, but that's a brand claim.
The research is small and mixed. A 2023 scoping review by Tedeschi in Reabilitacijos mokslai found only 4 of 23 studies met its criteria and reported "clear gaps in primary research." In its background section, the review notes "very limited scientific evidence" that the socks improve postural control.
The review also cites a study (Shinohara & Gribble, 2013) in which simple five-toed socks "did not provide a significant improvement in postural control" compared with plain socks or no socks in healthy young adults. A few small studies have looked at toe socks with grippers, but we couldn't verify them.
ToeSox vs. Tavi
ToeSox and Tavi are sister brands under the same parent company, Thirty Three Threads, and the ToeSox site lists Tavi as a sister brand. They make different kinds of socks:
- ToeSox makes five-toe socks. Its half-toe line includes the Low Rise, Bellarina, Elle, Ivy, Slouch, Melody, Mia and Luna, plus "Tec" versions of the Bellarina and Elle and Ultra Fine Knit versions of several styles.
- Tavi makes regular full-toe grip socks. Searching Tavi's site for "toeless" brings up a notice that ToeSox products have "moved to their new home" at toesox.com, and we didn't find a toeless Tavi style.
So "ToeSox vs. Tavi" is really half toe vs. full toe. Both brands describe their sole as a "patented non-slip grip sole," but we couldn't find a patent number, so treat that as a brand claim. If you want a full-toe sock from the same family, NBC Select's best overall pick is the Tavi Savvy. Our Tavi grip socks review covers it in detail.
Prefer full toe? See the Tavi SavvyHow to choose toeless grip socks
Check your studio's rules first
GGR suggests asking your instructor before buying toeless socks if you take in-person classes. NBC Select's experts advise against half-toe designs for hygiene. If you're not sure your studio requires grip socks at all, see do you need grip socks for Pilates.
Open front or half toe
Open-front socks (Gaiam, PIGA, Tucketts) leave all your toes free together, usually with straps on top. Half-toe socks (ToeSox, Pointe Studio, Injinji) put each toe in its own short sleeve. Reviewers treat them differently: NBC's warning is aimed at the half-toe style, while GGR's toeless pick is open front.
Grip coverage: full sole beats ball and heel
GGR says "a full-foot of silicone grippers works the best. At minimum, look for socks with silicone grips under the ball of the foot and heel." NBC Select's experts add that grips shouldn't be too thick, so "you can grip the machine and feel the bottom of your foot." Yahoo's one grip complaint about the ToeSox Low Rise was that the grip stops short of the back of the heel.
Fit and sizing
"We want them to be gripping your feet, so we don't want them to be loose," NBC Select's experts say. Loose socks can come off or shift, which moves the grips. Size charts differ by brand. ToeSox goes up to 13, PIGA to XXL, Pointe Studio's Basal was only offered up to M/L (8–10) when we checked, and Gaiam is one size up to women's 10. Wide feet? See our grip socks for wide feet guide.
Straps and heel tabs
GGR notes customer reviews found Gaiam's strappy toeless socks hard to put on and said the design cut off circulation around the toes. The ToeSox Low Rise uses a raised heel tab and an arch band instead of straps.
Care
ToeSox and Pointe Studio both say to wash inside out on a gentle cycle, then line dry or tumble on low. That may matter more for half-toe socks, given the fraying Yahoo reported. See how to wash grip socks for more.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are toeless grip socks allowed in Pilates studios?
It depends on the studio. Garage Gym Reviews says many studios ask students to wear socks "for health and hygiene reasons, not just traction" and suggests asking your instructor before buying toeless socks. NBC Select's experts advise against toeless socks that "separate your toes but don't cover them" (the half-toe style).
Can you wear toeless grip socks on a reformer?
Some people do, but check your studio's rules first. Yahoo Health's tester said the ToeSox Half Toe Low Rise "slipped during certain reformer moves like scooters." Fuse Pilates owner Saba Alavi-Parham told NBC Select the best socks have grips running from the toes to the heel for safety and to prevent slipping. Yahoo suggests the ToeSox for mat Pilates.
Are toeless grip socks better than full-toe?
Not clearly. GGR's tester felt more grounded with her toes exposed and thought the grip might be better. NBC Select's experts prefer grips that run from toes to heel, and none of NBC's picks is toeless. A 2023 scoping review found clear gaps in the research on five-toed socks, including on balance.
What's the difference between ToeSox and Tavi?
They're sister brands under the same parent company, Thirty Three Threads. ToeSox makes five-toe socks, including half-toe styles with open tips. Tavi makes regular full-toe grip socks. Searching Tavi's site for "toeless" brings up a notice pointing to toesox.com, and we didn't find a toeless Tavi style.
Do half-toe socks wear out faster?
One tester reported that. Yahoo Health's tester saw "quite a bit of fraying around the toes after machine-washing them only twice" on the ToeSox Half Toe Low Rise. ToeSox and Pointe Studio recommend washing inside out on a gentle cycle and line drying or tumbling on low.
Which toeless grip socks fit large or men's feet?
PIGA's PigaLite uses unisex sizing up to XXL (about men's 12.5), per PIGA. ToeSox half-toe styles go up to L (11–13). Gaiam's toeless sock tops out at women's 10 / men's 9, per GGR.
The verdict
Taking reformer classes at a studio? Get a full-toe pair unless your instructor says toeless is fine. For mat work or home practice, pick by style:
- Open front: the Gaiam Grippy Toeless is GGR's pick and the cheapest, if your feet fit its one size.
- Half toe: the ToeSox Half Toe Low Rise is Yahoo Health's best open-toe pick, but watch for fraying.
For bigger feet, try the PIGA PigaLite. Want more ankle coverage? The Injinji x Pointe Studio Mini-Crew is the only taller option here.
Open front: check Gaiam Grippy Toeless Half toe: check ToeSox Half Toe Low RiseIf your studio requires closed-toe socks, or you'd rather follow NBC Select's experts, go with a full-toe pair such as the Tavi Savvy, or pick one from our best Pilates grip socks guide.
