The best grip socks for barre hold the ball of your foot and heel through relevé, plié and one-leg balances. Pure Barre requires sticky socks in every class, Physique 57 calls them "non-negotiable," and other studios vary, so check yours.
What matters for barre is a little different from reformer Pilates. Look for grip under the forefoot and heel, a sock that doesn't twist when you rise onto your toes, and some cushioning at the back of the heel for floor and barre stretches. Our top picks for the best grip socks for barre are the Tavi Emma (Mary Jane), the ToeSox Half Toe Bellarina (half toe) and the Pointe Studio Josie (full-foot strap).
How we chose: We read the sock rules and advice from four barre studios (Pure Barre, barre3, Physique 57 and The Bar Method). Then we compared brand specs and size charts from Tavi, ToeSox, Pointe Studio and Gaiam, and checked outlet roundups from NBC Select and Garage Gym Reviews. We don't test products in-house, and we say when a pick rests on brand specs alone.

The best grip socks for barre
Best Overall for Barre
1. Tavi Emma Grip Socks
Tavi describes the Emma as "airy precision in a Mary Jane silhouette," with hand-linked toe seams and heel protection. It's a low-cut sock that, per Tavi, hugs "the foot just below the ankle." The Mary Jane cutout gives it the ballet-slipper look a lot of barre regulars like, and Tavi's Amazon listing names barre among its uses.
- Design: Mary Jane cutout, heel protection, arch band with compression, high-density rubber grip sole (per Tavi)
- Material: 73% organic cotton, 14% nylon, 7% elastane, 6% polyester (per Tavi)
- Sizes: S (6–8) and M (8.5–10.5), plus XS (Tavi's XS range differs by listing: 3–5.5 or 4–6). Ebony also comes in L, but the page doesn't label its range; we saw 11–13 only in search snippets, so treat that range as unconfirmed.
- Care: turn inside out, gentle cold wash, no fabric softener, air dry (per Tavi)
Size availability depends on the color. When we checked Tavi's site on October 14, 2026, Ebony was in stock in XS, S, M and L, while Classical and Marina came only in S and M. Tavi also sells a lighter Emma Breeze version.
On Tavi's own site, the Classical page showed 199 reviews, 89% of them five stars. One reviewer wrote, "These stay on regardless of the pose," and an XS buyer noted that XS sizes are hard to find. These are brand-site reviews, so read them with that in mind.
Tavi sells the Emma in sizes, not one size, so check the size chart before you order.
Pros
- ✓ Mary Jane look suits barre
- ✓ Heel protection and arch band
- ✓ XS through L in Ebony
Cons
- ✗ Seasonal colors only in S and M when we checked
- ✗ No outlet review found
- ✗ Some Amazon reviewers found the fabric thin
Best Half Toe
2. ToeSox Half Toe Bellarina Grip Socks
ToeSox calls the Bellarina a "dance-inspired style with barefoot performance." It's a five-toe half-toe sock, so each toe gets a short sleeve and the tips stay bare, with a Mary Jane strap over the top, "raised heel protection, and premium grip technology" (all brand claims). Earlier ToeSox copy, which we saw only in a search snippet, said the heel tab cushions the Achilles during leg stretches on the floor or at the barre.
- Material: 80% organic cotton, 16% polyester, 4% elastane (per ToeSox)
- Sizes: Black came in S (6–8), M (8.5–10.5) and L (11–13) on October 14, 2026. XS (3–5.5) exists in some colors, and several seasonal colors were available in S and M. The Eventide color was sold out.
We didn't find an outlet review of the Bellarina. It's also one of our picks in best toeless grip socks, which covers the half-toe style in more depth. Some studios and Pilates instructors prefer covered toes, so check with yours first.
ToeSox's dedicated barre sock, the Plié, has a leather pad that, per ToeSox, gives "superior traction for turns and stops." Every color of the Half Toe Plié was sold out on toesox.com when we checked, so it isn't a pick here.
Pros
- ✓ Half toe for more floor feel
- ✓ Mary Jane strap and raised heel
- ✓ Sizes up to 13 in Black
Cons
- ✗ No outlet review found
- ✗ Toe sleeves aren't for everyone
- ✗ Some studios may prefer covered toes
Best Full-Foot Strap
3. Pointe Studio Josie Strap Grip Sock
The Josie is one of Pointe Studio's strap styles, which the brand describes this way: "Breathable flexibility and comfort come together in our strap styles." Unlike the two Mary Jane picks above, it has grip across the whole sole, so it could also work for reformer classes (that's our inference, not a brand claim).
- Design: straps across the top, full-foot grip, compression arch support, padded ankle rest, cushioned terry footbed (per Pointe Studio)
- Material: 55% cotton, 40% nylon, 5% spandex (combed cotton)
- Sizes: Pointe Studio lists S/M (5–7) and M/L (8–10), and Black and Charcoal were offered only in those two sizes on October 14, 2026. Its size info also mentions an L/XL, but gives the range as 11–12 in one place and 11–13 in another, and we couldn't confirm an L/XL for the Josie.
- Colors: Black, Charcoal, Rust and Aragon
- Care: machine wash inside out on a delicate cycle, then air dry or tumble on low (per Pointe Studio)
The review count on Pointe Studio's page covers the whole store, not this sock, so we didn't find Josie-specific reviews. An older Amazon two-pack appeared as "Currently Unavailable" in search results, so the button goes to Pointe Studio.
Pros
- ✓ Full-foot grip
- ✓ Padded ankle rest
- ✓ A strap style sold for studio workouts
Cons
- ✗ No confirmed size above M/L (women's 10)
- ✗ No Josie-specific reviews found
- ✗ Linked to the brand site (older Amazon listing unavailable)
Best Budget
4. Gaiam Grippy Studio Yoga Socks
NBC Select named Gaiam's Grippy Studio socks its best budget Pilates sock, and NBC says the socks it picked also work for barre and yoga. Gaiam's own description lists barre among the uses. NBC's staff noted, "The socks have a low cut, so the straps are key." It's also a pick in our best Pilates grip socks guide.
- Design: criss-cross elastic straps, low cut
- Size: one size, women's 5–10 / men's 4–9
- Material: 98% polyester, 2% spandex (per NBC Select)
NBC listed thinner material and the single size as cons, though its reviewer said the lightweight fabric suits people doing heated workouts. If your feet are outside that range, start with one of the sized picks above.
Pros
- ✓ Lowest price tier here
- ✓ NBC Select's budget pick
- ✓ Straps help keep a low-cut sock on
Cons
- ✗ Thinner material, per NBC Select
- ✗ One size only
Best for Cold Studios
5. Tavi Jane Grip Socks (knee high)
The Tavi Jane is a knee-high grip sock. If your studio runs cold, or you like the ballet-core look, it covers your calves without a separate pair of leg warmers.
- Design: non-slip sole, arch compression (per Tavi)
- Material: 81% GOTS organic cotton, 16% nylon, 2% elastane, 1% elastodiene (per Tavi)
- Sizes: S (6–8), M (8.5–10.5)
We didn't find an outlet review. It's the priciest pick here and stops at women's 10.5. Prefer to keep your ankle socks? See our best Pilates leg warmers.
Pros
- ✓ Knee-high warmth
- ✓ Mostly organic cotton
- ✓ No separate leg warmers needed
Cons
- ✗ Only S and M
- ✗ Highest price tier here
- ✗ No outlet review found
Others we considered
- Pointe Studio Happy Full Foot: Garage Gym Reviews' overall pick for Pilates, but it's a general full-foot sock, not a barre style. The Josie is the same brand's strap option.
- ToeSox Plié: ToeSox's dedicated barre sock, but every color of the Half Toe Plié was sold out on toesox.com when we checked.
- Bombas Studio Gripper Ballet No Show: bombas.com wouldn't load for us, so we couldn't confirm its specs or sizing.
- Alo Pivot Barre Sock: the color we checked was out of stock, and we saw its specs only in search snippets.
- lululemon Find Your Balance Studio Tab Socks: Garage Gym Reviews' reviewer found them very thin and said they're not the pick if you want cushioning.
- Amazon multi-packs: Pilates Report's Amazon roundup names budget multi-pack brands; we didn't find barre-specific specs for them.
Do you need grip socks for barre?
It depends on the studio. Here's what four barre brands say.
Tap the diagram to enlarge
Pure Barre socks
Pure Barre's blog says "all Pure Barre classes require everyone to wear sticky socks," and that the workout is done without shoes "for health & safety reasons." It calls sticky socks "a required uniform for the barre." That's the studio's rule and reasoning; we didn't find a study on grip socks in barre.
The blog adds that its studios "have specialized flooring that provide considerably more traction than studios with wooden floors," and that sticky socks "help you safely perform the workout." You can buy sticky socks in the studio boutique before or after class, and Pure Barre suggests new members start with at least two pairs. Its New to Barre page gives the same basics: you take off your shoes and wear sticky socks, and studios sell them.
What about Pure Barre's own socks? The blog doesn't name a brand, but it says the boutique carries "the latest styles and holiday-themed pairs," and that the in-studio socks "are specifically designed for the Pure Barre workout." It also acknowledges "you can buy sticky socks in other places." Any of the picks above has a grip sole, but confirm with your studio.
barre3, Physique 57 and The Bar Method
- barre3: a 2017 barre3 blog post said, "You don't need to worry about bringing grip socks (unless you'd prefer them)." That's an old post, so check with your studio.
- Physique 57: its March 2026 blog calls grip socks the "non-negotiable" part of a barre outfit. It says they help you "perform the workout more safely, minimize injuries, improve traction," advises against socks without grips, and calls grip socks "more hygienic than going barefoot in shared studio spaces." Those are the studio's claims.
- The Bar Method: "Because Bar Method studios are carpeted, socks are required in class," its blog says. It adds that "Grippy socks help you hold poses longer," but it requires socks, not specifically grip socks.
For the Pilates side of this question, see do you need grip socks for Pilates.
Barre socks vs. Pilates socks
Mostly, they're the same thing. Uniq Socks, an Australian sock seller, says, "There is no single construction detail that separates every barre sock from every Pilates sock." The differences in toe coverage, straps, cuff height and grip pattern come down to individual designs. For barre, it suggests looking for "grip beneath the areas that make contact during your class, particularly the heel and forefoot."
The Grip Collective, another sock seller, answers "No—but you do need the right kind of socks" when asked whether you need different pairs. For barre, it lists "reliable grip (especially forefoot + heel)," "breathable fabric" and "socks that stay in place." These are retailer opinions, not test results.
If you also take reformer classes, a full-sole grip like the Pointe Studio Josie covers both. That's our inference from the grip layout, not a brand claim.
How to choose grip socks for barre
Grip under the forefoot and heel
Relevé puts your weight on the ball of the foot, and many barre moves have you sliding or balancing. Both sock sellers above point to the forefoot and heel as the areas that need grip. The Grip Collective's barre guide goes further and recommends full-foot grip coverage.
Tap the diagram to enlarge
A fit that won't twist
The Grip Collective's barre guide calls for a snug fit with "no slipping inside the sock." Barre socks handle this in a few ways:
- Mary Jane cutouts (Tavi Emma, ToeSox Bellarina) hold the sock across the instep.
- Straps (Pointe Studio Josie, Gaiam) cross over the top of the foot.
- Toe sleeves (ToeSox Bellarina) can help anchor the sock. ToeSox says of its Plié barre sock, now sold out, that the five-toe design "anchors sock to the foot to minimize twisting + bunching."
Heel tab for floor and barre stretches
Some barre-friendly socks add protection at the heel. Tavi lists heel protection on the Emma, and ToeSox describes "raised heel protection" on the Bellarina. ToeSox has said the Bellarina's heel tab cushions the Achilles during stretches (snippet only).
Size by shoe size, not "one size"
A sock that's too big can twist under your foot. Gaiam's one size stops at women's 10. Tavi and ToeSox sell XS through L, but not every color comes in every size, so check the size before the color. For wider feet, see best grip socks for wide feet.
Breathable fabric
The Grip Collective recommends breathable fabric "because barre = heat." NBC Select lists Gaiam's socks as 98% polyester and 2% spandex and calls them lightweight, good for heated workouts.
Care
Pure Barre says to wash grip socks inside out on a cold or gentle cycle, avoid using too much detergent, and air dry instead of using the dryer. It says socks "can last you years" with proper care, which is a brand claim. Tavi gives similar advice and adds no fabric softener. More tips: how to wash grip socks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need grip socks for barre?
It depends on the studio. Pure Barre requires sticky socks in every class. Physique 57 calls grip socks "non-negotiable." The Bar Method requires socks because its studios are carpeted. A 2017 barre3 blog post said you don't need to bring grip socks unless you prefer them. Check with your studio.
Can you wear regular socks to barre?
Pure Barre's blog points members to sticky socks rather than plain socks, and Physique 57 advises against socks without grips. The Bar Method requires socks but doesn't say they must have grips.
Are barre socks and Pilates socks the same?
Mostly. Sock sellers Uniq Socks and The Grip Collective say there's no consistent construction difference between the two. For barre, prioritize grip under the forefoot and heel and a fit that stays in place.
Where can I buy Pure Barre socks?
Pure Barre says you can buy sticky socks in the studio boutique before or after class. Its blog says the in-studio socks are designed for the Pure Barre workout but acknowledges you can buy sticky socks elsewhere, so confirm with your studio first.
Can you do barre barefoot?
At home, that's up to you. In studios, Physique 57 says grip socks are "more hygienic than going barefoot in shared studio spaces," and Pure Barre and The Bar Method require socks.
Should barre socks be toeless or full toe?
Either can work. Half-toe styles like the ToeSox Bellarina leave the toe tips bare for more floor feel, but some studios prefer covered toes, so check with yours. Full-toe picks here include the Tavi Emma and Pointe Studio Josie.
How do you wash barre grip socks?
Pure Barre says to wash them inside out on a cold or gentle cycle, use little detergent and air dry. Tavi says to turn them inside out, use a gentle cold wash, skip fabric softener and air dry.
The verdict
- Most barre classes: the Tavi Emma: a Mary Jane cut with heel protection, sized XS and up.
- Barre plus reformer: the Pointe Studio Josie, since its full-foot grip covers both.
- Toe-sock fans: the ToeSox Half Toe Bellarina.
- First class on a budget: the Gaiam Grippy Studio, if your feet fit its one size.
- Cold studio: the knee-high Tavi Jane.
