Most Pilates studios won't let you on a reformer without grip socks. They keep you from sliding on the carriage, and they're more hygienic on shared equipment. Not all grip socks are equal, though. Partial grips slip during footwork, loose socks twist under your foot, and some studios don't allow toeless styles.

How we chose: We compared materials, grip coverage, toe style and sizing for each sock, and cross-checked hands-on results from Yahoo Health (16 pairs tested), Garage Gym Reviews and NBC Select. We don't test socks in-house. Every claim below is attributed to its source so you can check it.

Quick Comparison

The Best Pilates Grip Socks

Best Overall

1. Pointe Studio Happy Full Grip Socks

Check price on Amazon

Pointe Studio's full-grip socks were the only pair to earn perfect scores in Yahoo Health's 16-sock test, with excellent grip on both mat and reformer. Garage Gym Reviews also ranks Pointe Studio among its top picks.

  • Grip: full sole, triangle pattern
  • Material: cotton, nylon and spandex blend
  • Sizes: women's S/M and M/L (up to about women's 10)

The main drawback is sizing: they run small and stop at about a women's 10. Pointe Studio says the socks stretch slightly and mold to your feet over time.

Pros

  • ✓ Excellent grip on mat and reformer
  • ✓ Full-sole coverage
  • ✓ Lots of colors and styles

Cons

  • ✗ Runs small
  • ✗ Limited size range

Best for Reformer

2. Tavi Savvy Grip Socks

Check price on Amazon

Tavi is the brand you'll most often see in reformer studios, and NBC Select named the Savvy its best overall. A studio owner they interviewed praised how snug and long-lasting the socks are. The triangle grip pattern covers the whole sole, which matters on a sliding carriage.

  • Grip: full sole, triangle pattern
  • Material: organic cotton blend
  • Sizes: XS–XL for the low-rise Savvy. The Kai crew comes in fewer sizes.

Some reviewers with narrow heels say the low-rise Savvy can slip at the heel. If that sounds like you, consider a higher cut.

Pros

  • ✓ Full-sole grip for reformer work
  • ✓ Durable
  • ✓ Wide XS–XL sizing

Cons

  • ✗ Low-rise cut can slip on narrow heels

Best Budget

3. Ozaiic Pilates Grip Socks

Check price on Amazon

If you go to class several times a week, you'll want several pairs, and multipacks keep that affordable. Yahoo Health picked Ozaiic as its best budget option, with grip that's ready for reformer work.

  • Grip: silicone in targeted zones
  • Style: closed toe with ballet straps
  • Sizes: one size (about women's 5.5–11)

The trade-offs: Yahoo found them less breathable, and Garage Gym Reviews noted that one-size fit doesn't suit everyone and the straps can loosen.

Pros

  • ✓ Under $10 per pair
  • ✓ Good grip for the price
  • ✓ Multipacks for weekly classes

Cons

  • ✗ Less breathable
  • ✗ One size only
  • ✗ Straps can loosen

Best for Hot Classes

4. Gaiam Grippy Studio Yoga Socks

Check price on Amazon

Gaiam's grippy socks are mostly polyester and spandex, so they wick sweat instead of soaking it up like cotton. That's why NBC Select recommends them for heated classes. The grip covers the whole bottom of the foot, and Garage Gym Reviews notes they're machine washable.

  • Sizes: one size (women's 5–10, men's 4–9)
  • Styles: criss-cross strap version and a toeless version

GGR found the toeless version hard to put on, with some pressure between the toes.

Pros

  • ✓ Sweat-wicking synthetic fabric
  • ✓ Full-bottom grip
  • ✓ Inexpensive

Cons

  • ✗ One size
  • ✗ Toeless version can pinch

Best for Wide Size Range

5. Bombas Studio Gripper Ballet No Show

Check price at Bombas

Bombas gets two things right: full-length grip that runs in lines rather than dots, and broad sizing (women's 4–13, men's 6–16). That makes it one of the easiest picks for men and anyone with larger feet. Yahoo Health found it the best performer on the reformer.

On the downside, Yahoo's tester found the criss-cross straps felt tight by the end of class and their feet moved a bit inside the sock during mat work. Garage Gym Reviews saw mixed reports on durability.

Pros

  • ✓ Excellent reformer grip
  • ✓ Very wide size range
  • ✓ Comfortable seamless toe

Cons

  • ✗ Straps can feel tight
  • ✗ Pricier
  • ✗ Mixed durability reports

Best Barefoot Feel

6. ToeSox Half Toe Low Rise

Check price on Amazon

If you want to spread and grip with your toes, ToeSox separates each one. The half-toe version leaves the toe tips open. Yahoo Health found them comfortable with strong grip on the mat.

They're less suited to the reformer: the grip stops short of the heel, and Yahoo's tester slipped during moves like scooters. Also check your studio's rules first. NBC Select's experts advise against toeless styles for hygiene reasons.

Pros

  • ✓ Natural, barefoot-like feel
  • ✓ Organic cotton
  • ✓ Great on the mat

Cons

  • ✗ Heel grip gap slips on reformer
  • ✗ Some studios discourage toeless styles
  • ✗ Takes time to get used to

Best Crew Length

7. Fitness Snob Got A Grip Crew

Check price on Amazon

Crew-length grip socks stay put during quick footwork and keep your ankles warm in cold studios. NBC Select highlighted the Fitness Snob crew for its extra cushioning and full grip coverage, which an editor said keeps her stable when standing on the reformer.

Pros

  • ✓ Extra cushioning
  • ✓ Full grip coverage
  • ✓ Stays up during footwork

Cons

  • ✗ Premium price
  • ✗ Two sizes only (S/M, M/L)

Best for Style

8. Lucky Honey Harlow

Check price at Lucky Honey

Lucky Honey is the grip sock for people who want their socks to look good in class. The Harlow is a quarter-length, one-size sock (80% cotton) with a full honeycomb grip. An instructor quoted by NBC Select likes how well it grips and how it conforms to the foot.

Lucky Honey sells mainly through its own site, and Amazon listings are limited.

Pros

  • ✓ Full honeycomb grip
  • ✓ Conforms to the foot
  • ✓ Stylish designs

Cons

  • ✗ Mostly sold on the brand site
  • ✗ One size

How to Choose Pilates Grip Socks

Grip coverage matters most

Three sock soles compared: full-sole grip, grip only at the ball and heel, and grip only in the center

Tap the diagram to enlarge

Full-sole grip keeps your whole foot planted on the carriage and footbar.

For reformer work, the grip should run from toe to heel. Your heel, midfoot and ball of the foot all press against the footbar and carriage. Garage Gym Reviews found full-sole silicone grips outperformed partial coverage, and Yahoo saw partial-grip socks slip on the reformer.

Fit: snug beats loose

A loose sock twists, and when the sock moves, so does the grip. Look for a snug fit and an arch band if possible. If you're between sizes, size down unless the brand says otherwise.

Toe style

Three grip sock toe styles: closed toe, half toe with open toe tips, and full toe with each toe covered

Tap the diagram to enlarge

Closed toe is the safe choice if you're unsure about your studio's rules.

Closed-toe socks are the safe default, and some studios require them. Toeless and toe-separated styles give a barefoot feel, but NBC Select's experts advise against them on shared equipment for hygiene.

Material

Synthetic blends wick sweat and are best for heated classes. Cotton feels softer but holds moisture.

Care

Wash grip socks inside out and air-dry them. Dryer heat weakens the silicone grips over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need grip socks for Pilates?

Most studios require them for safety and hygiene on shared equipment. At home they're optional, but they still help on a reformer or a slippery floor.

Can I wear regular socks to Pilates?

It's not recommended. Regular socks have no grip, absorb moisture and shift around, which makes you more likely to slip on the reformer.

What kind of grip is best for reformer Pilates?

Full-sole grip that covers toe to heel. Socks with grips only at the ball and heel can slip during reformer footwork.

How do you wash Pilates grip socks?

Turn them inside out, machine wash cold and air-dry. High dryer heat breaks down the silicone grips.

How much should I spend on grip socks?

Top-rated pairs are usually $10–20. Budget multipacks can be under $10 per pair, which is handy if you take several classes a week.

The Verdict

For most people, Pointe Studio's full-grip socks are the best all-round choice, as long as they fit your size. If you live on the reformer, Tavi Savvy is the studio favorite. If you need several pairs for the week, an Ozaiic multipack keeps the cost down. And if you have larger feet, Bombas offers the widest size range.
