How much space do you need for a Pilates reformer? The machine itself is the easy part: most home reformers are about 7 to 8.5 feet long, according to manufacturer specs. With clearance, plan on a zone of roughly 10–14 by 5–7 feet. The harder part is planning the clear floor around it, the ceiling height for standing exercises, and where it goes when you're done.
How we researched this: We compiled published dimensions, ceiling-height and storage specs from Balanced Body, Merrithew, Stamina (AeroPilates), Flexia and Align-Pilates product pages. We cross-checked them against reviews from NBC Select, Women's Health (via Yahoo Shopping) and Yahoo Health. We don't test products. Manufacturers don't publish a standard clearance figure, so the clearance numbers here come from seller guidance and are labeled that way. All sources are listed at the end.
Short answer: how much space a reformer needs (about 10–14 ft by 5–7 ft)
For a full-size home reformer, plan a clear zone of about 10–14 feet long by 5–7 feet wide (roughly 45–91 sq ft). That's the machine plus 1–3 feet of clearance, based on seller guidance (our arithmetic below). Manufacturers we checked (Balanced Body, Flexia, Align-Pilates) list only machine dimensions, not clearance, so the clearance figures come from reformer sellers:
- Core Collab Europe, a European reformer seller, says to "factor in an additional 30 to 60 cm of clearance on all sides to perform exercises safely." That's about 1 to 2 feet.
- Modern Reform, a reformer seller, recommends "at least 2 feet on either side" and "a minimum of 3 feet" at the head and foot "to accommodate exercises that require overreaching or extensions."
Here's our own arithmetic using a Balanced Body Allegro 2, which the brand lists at 94 × 31.25 inches with the footbar:
| Clearance per side | Zone size | In feet | Sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 ft (12 in) | ~118 × 55 in | ~9.8 × 4.6 ft | ~45 |
| 2 ft (24 in) | ~142 × 79 in | ~12 × 6.6 ft | ~78 |
| 2 ft sides, 3 ft ends | ~166 × 79 in | ~13.8 × 6.6 ft | ~91 |
For comparison, ReformerPilates.com suggests 40–50 sq ft per reformer in a studio, where machines share aisles.
So for a full-size machine, a zone of roughly 10–12 feet long and 5–7 feet wide covers the 1–2 foot range. Modern Reform's 3-foot ends push the length closer to 14 feet. Narrower budget machines need less width. The AeroPilates 287 (17.5 in wide, per Stamina) with 2 feet on each side needs about 5.5 feet (our arithmetic).

How to measure your room
Tap the diagram to enlarge
1. Measure the machine footprint with the footbar
Use the "in use" dimensions, not the frame alone. The footbar adds width: Balanced Body lists the Allegro 2 frame at 94 × 25 inches, but 94 × 31.25 inches with the footbar. Merrithew lists its reformer lengths with the footbar down.
2. Add clearance at the head, foot and sides
Add the seller ranges above: about 1–2 feet on all sides (Core Collab Europe), or 2 feet at the sides and 3 feet at each end (Modern Reform). Treat these as brand guidance, not a standard. Whatever you choose, leave room on one side to step on and off the carriage.
3. Check ceiling height for standing work and upright storage
Merrithew is the only maker we found that publishes a minimum ceiling height for standing exercises. It lists:
- 99 inches (2.51 m) for the At Home SPX, "for standing exercises with hands overhead (based on 5'8" person)."
- 97.5 inches (2.48 m) for the SPX Max Plus, also based on a 5'8" person with hands overhead.
By our math, both are a little over a standard 8-foot (96-inch) ceiling. For studios, ReformerPilates.com, a commercial equipment and training business, calls 8 feet "the minimum workable ceiling height" and 10 feet "the comfortable standard."
Upright storage needs height too. Balanced Body tells Allegro 2 owners to "confirm ceiling height clearance before vertical storage." Since the frame is 94 inches long, that means more than 7'10" of clearance (our arithmetic). For the longer Allegro Stretch, Balanced Body says the "preferred ceiling height is at least 120" or 10 feet" when it's stored upright.
Adding a tower also adds height. Balanced Body says the Allegro 2 Tower adds 61 inches above the frame (68.75 inches for the Allegro Stretch Tower), though the Allegro 2 tower kit "does not change the footprint."
4. Check the path in and the floor under it
Manufacturers we checked don't publish box dimensions; measure doorways against the frame length. The one delivery detail we found is from Flexia, which says it ships "in multiple, easy to move boxes so one person can receive and assemble." Weight matters on stairs too: Balanced Body lists the Allegro 2 at 148–155 lb, and Merrithew lists the SPX Max Plus at 164 lb.
None of the manufacturer pages we checked gives guidance on flooring or floor protection under a reformer.
5. Plan where it lives when you're not using it
- Under a bed: Balanced Body says the Metro IQ with "wheelbarrow" wheels slides under a bed with 9 inches of clearance.
- In a closet: The Metro IQ telescopes to 61.5 inches. With "library" wheels it stands upright, and the brand says "Most customers choose Library wheels."
- Upright against a wall: the Allegro 2 with its optional wheel kit, according to Balanced Body, and the Flexia, which NBC Select says "has wheels and stores upright."
- Folded: AeroPilates folding models from Stamina.

"n/a" means we didn't find the figure on the manufacturer page we checked. Women's Health reports the AeroPilates 287 at "42 inches when folded," but that's a reviewer figure, not a Stamina spec.
From these specs, full-size home reformers run about 85–100 inches long, with the Allegro Stretch at 111 inches. Widths run from 17.5–21 inches for budget AeroPilates frames to 25–31 inches for studio-style machines, and 36 inches for the Allegro Stretch.
One more option from Balanced Body: the CenterLine is 91 × 25.5 inches, and the brand says it's "2" shorter in length, 1" narrower in width, than our other wood Reformers." NBC Select calls it "a better fit for small workout spaces." Note that it has no transport wheels, according to Balanced Body.
Small-space options
If floor space is tight, the storage style matters as much as the footprint. Our best foldable Pilates reformers guide covers these machines in more detail.
Folding and telescoping reformers
- AeroPilates 287: Women's Health says tester Amy Wilkinson "lives in a one-bedroom Brooklyn apartment and has no issues stashing it away," though she finds it "tricky to fold and wide when the foot bar is attached."
- AeroPilates 4420: Women's Health says it "can be stashed under a couch, bed, or behind a door."
- AeroPilates Premier Studio 700: Stamina lists it at 44 × 20 × 9 inches folded off its stand.
- Balanced Body Metro IQ: it telescopes from 96 to 61.5 inches. Yahoo Health reviewer Kelli McGrane, MS, RD, said "it collapses and can be stored under a bed or upright in a closet." Per Balanced Body, which one depends on the wheels you choose at purchase. She also noted that with two toddlers, "I don't have a great place to store it."
Upright-storing reformers
- Align-Pilates F3: folds to stand about 56.5 inches tall, and Align-Pilates says it "can be wheeled whilst both folded and unfolded."
- Flexia Smart Reformer: NBC Select says it "has wheels and stores upright."
- Balanced Body Allegro 2: stores upright with the optional wheel kit, per Balanced Body. Check your ceiling first (see step 3).
Some machines aren't meant to move much. Women's Health calls the Merrithew SPX bundle and the AeroPilates Pro "not ideal for apartments." It also describes the Allegro 2 as "eight feet long and three feet wide" and "heavy and immobile," and tester Talene Appleton said setup took about two hours with help.
The experts NBC Select spoke with point the same way. Certified personal trainer Josh York, founder of Gymguyz, says "the frame should be durable and long enough to accommodate the length of your body, but compact enough to suit your space." In the same article (updated January 10, 2024), Club Pilates VP of training Tianna Strateman says "foldable or compact options are excellent for smaller living areas."
When a Pilates board makes more sense
If you can't spare a 7-foot strip of floor, a board is a much smaller option. Flo lists its Portable Pilates Reformer at 41.5 × 15.5 inches unfolded and 20.75 × 15.5 inches folded, at about 10.9 lb. A board doesn't have a reformer's carriage, rails or springs, so it isn't a like-for-like swap. Our Pilates reformer vs. Pilates board guide compares the two.
Tall users need more length
Longer frames mean a bigger footprint. The Balanced Body Allegro Stretch frame is 111 inches long, and the AeroPilates Pro XP 557 is 100.5 inches. Merrithew lists the At Home SPX's ideal user height as 60–74 inches, and Flexia says its reformer fits users 5'0" to 6'6". If you're tall, see our best Pilates reformers for tall people, and add your clearance to the longer machine's length.

Which reformer fits your room?
- Can't clear about 9–10 ft of floor, even temporarily: a Pilates board like the Flo (41.5 in long unfolded, per Flo).
- Can clear about 9–10 ft for a workout but not keep it clear: a folding AeroPilates 287 or 4420 (85–86 in long in use, per Stamina) that you put away after each session.
- Small apartment, no dedicated room: a machine that stores small. The Metro IQ telescopes to 61.5 in. With Wheelbarrow wheels it slides under a bed with 9 in of clearance; with Library wheels it stands upright in a closet (Balanced Body). You choose the wheels when you buy.
- Dedicated zone of about 12 × 7 ft: a full-size machine like the Allegro 2. Check your ceiling first if you'll store it upright.
- Standing work under an 8-ft ceiling: Merrithew's listed minimums (97.5–99 in) are a little over 96 in, so check before you buy.
If you need a full reformer that disappears between workouts, the Metro IQ has the most detailed storage specs of the machines here (telescopes to 61.5 in, fits under a bed with 9 in of clearance with Wheelbarrow wheels, per Balanced Body). Note that the Amazon listing below is the Library wheels (upright closet storage) version; for under-bed storage, check the wheel option before you buy.

How much space do you need for a Pilates reformer at home?
Most home reformers are about 85–100 inches long and 17.5–31 inches wide, according to manufacturer specs. Manufacturers don't publish a clearance standard. Reformer seller Core Collab Europe suggests 30–60 cm (about 1–2 feet) on all sides, and seller Modern Reform suggests 2 feet at the sides and 3 feet at each end. By our arithmetic, that's roughly a 10–14 × 5–7 foot zone for a full-size machine, or about 45–91 square feet.
What are standard Pilates reformer dimensions?
There's no single standard. Balanced Body lists the Allegro 2 at 94 × 31.25 inches with the footbar, Merrithew lists the At Home SPX at 96.5 × 26 inches, and Stamina lists the AeroPilates 287 at 85.25 × 17.5 inches. Long models like the Allegro Stretch reach 111 × 36 inches.
How high does the ceiling need to be for a reformer?
Merrithew lists a minimum of 97.5 inches (SPX Max Plus) and 99 inches (At Home SPX, based on a 5'8" user with hands overhead) for standing exercises. For upright storage, Balanced Body says to confirm ceiling clearance for the Allegro 2 and prefers at least 10 feet for the Allegro Stretch.
Can you fit a reformer in a small apartment?
Yes, with a folding, telescoping or upright model. Balanced Body says the Metro IQ shortens to 61.5 inches. With Wheelbarrow wheels it slides under a bed with 9 inches of clearance; with Library wheels it stands upright in a closet. You pick the wheels at purchase. A Women's Health tester stores the AeroPilates 287 in a one-bedroom Brooklyn apartment. Women's Health calls the Merrithew SPX bundle and AeroPilates Pro "not ideal for apartments."
Will a reformer fit through a doorway or up stairs?
Manufacturers we checked don't publish box dimensions, so measure doorways and stair turns against the frame length. Flexia says it ships in multiple boxes so one person can receive and assemble it. Weight also matters on stairs: Balanced Body lists the Allegro 2 at 148–155 lb, and Merrithew lists the SPX Max Plus at 164 lb.
Does a reformer need to go against a wall?
Manufacturers we checked don't say. Modern Reform suggests at least 2 feet on either side and 3 feet at each end, and you need room on one side to step on and off the carriage.
How much does a home reformer weigh?
Among the machines we compared, manufacturer weights run from 56 lb (AeroPilates 287, per Stamina) to 164 lb (Merrithew SPX Max Plus, per Merrithew). Weight matters if you plan to move it in and out of storage.
How much space does a reformer studio need per machine?
ReformerPilates.com, a commercial equipment and training business, recommends 40–50 square feet per reformer on the workout floor and aisles at least 3 feet wide between rows. That's the company's guidance, not an industry standard.
