If you've run out of carriage, had your head hang off the headrest, or felt your knees jammed against the footbar, the machine was probably too short for you. The best Pilates reformer for tall people has a longer frame and carriage, or an official extension.
Standard reformers fit most people, but makers don't agree on where "most" ends. Balanced Body's reformer buying guide suggests extended frames like its Allegro Stretch for users 5'10" and up, while the video description on its Allegro Stretch page calls that machine "perfect for large and tall users over 6'4" (195cm)." (Balanced Body sells the Stretch, so both are brand claims.) Merrithew aims its extension upgrade at people 6'4" and taller.
When you're shopping as a tall user, check four things: frame length, carriage length, the published height range (if the maker gives one) and footbar adjustability. Some machines also come in official "Stretch" or extended versions, and those are the most direct fix.
How we chose: We compared published frame and carriage lengths, user height ranges, weight limits and extension options from Balanced Body, Merrithew, Flexia, Stamina and Align-Pilates. We then cross-checked them against NBC Select, Women's Health and Forbes Vetted. We don't test products in-house. Several makers don't publish a user height range, and we say so where that's the case. All sources are listed at the end of this guide.

The best Pilates reformers for tall people
Best overall
1. Balanced Body Allegro Stretch Reformer
The Allegro Stretch is the most direct answer to "I'm too tall for a reformer." Balanced Body says it's "designed for taller and larger exercisers," and its Allegro 2 page points tall users here too.
- Frame: 111 × 36 × 6¾ inches (14 inches high with legs). Balanced Body says that's 18 inches longer than the original Allegro Reformer.
- Carriage: 34⅝ × 24¾ inches, which Balanced Body says is 6 inches longer and 2 inches wider than the original.
- Footbar: 36 inches wide, with 5 locking positions, according to Balanced Body.
- Resistance: 5 long Signature Springs (three red, one blue, one yellow).
- Weight and storage: 138 lb (149 lb with legs). It has transport wheels and can be stored vertically.
- Warranty: Limited lifetime on the frame and footbar. Made in the USA.
NBC Select recommends it for larger or taller users and notes a 3-position headrest and 5-position footbar.
Balanced Body says the Stretch suits "large and tall users over 6'4" (195cm)" (in the video description on its product page) but doesn't publish a maximum user weight there. The Amazon listing reportedly shows a much lower weight limit and a different footbar count, so this guide uses the manufacturer's figures. Ask Balanced Body if the weight limit matters to you.
Pros
- ✓ Purpose-built extended frame and carriage
- ✓ Wider carriage than the standard Allegro
- ✓ 5-position footbar
- ✓ Lifetime frame and footbar warranty
Cons
- ✗ 111 inches long, so it needs a long room
- ✗ No published weight limit
- ✗ Heavy at 138 lb
Best official extension
2. Merrithew SPX Max Plus Reformer
The SPX Max Plus already has a long carriage, and Merrithew sells an optional extension for very tall users.
- Size: 99.5 × 26 inches (footbar down), with a 38.5-inch carriage, according to Merrithew.
- Capacity: 350 lb, on a 164-lb machine.
- Resistance: 5 springs (three full, one half, one quarter strength), with 4 footbar positions.
- Warranty: Limited lifetime on the aluminum rails, frame and gearbar/footbar mechanisms; 2 years on other components; 1 year on ropes, straps, spring clips and spring covers; 90 days on upholstery, according to Merrithew.
The Extension Upgrade adds 6 inches to the carriage and overall length. Merrithew says it's "ideal for clients 6 ft 4 in (193 cm) and taller or those with longer torsos." The extension page lists a 102.5-inch length, which matches the shorter SPX Max rather than 99.5 inches plus 6, and Merrithew doesn't publish an extended length for the Max Plus. Ask Merrithew for that figure if room length is tight. It fits SPX Max and SPX Max Plus reformers and bundles, but not models with the Vertical Stand. Merrithew says the upgrade must be added when you buy the reformer and isn't available as a retrofit to older reformers.
Merrithew doesn't publish a height range for the standard SPX Max Plus. Retailer Pilates Matters estimates about 5'0" to 6'4", which we haven't confirmed. The Amazon listing showed no featured offers at the time of research, and we couldn't confirm the extension is sold there. Tall buyers will likely need to order through Merrithew or a dealer.
Pros
- ✓ Official 6-inch extension for 6'4"+ users
- ✓ Long 38.5-inch carriage
- ✓ 350-lb capacity
- ✓ Detailed warranty terms
Cons
- ✗ Extension must be ordered with the reformer
- ✗ Extension not confirmed on Amazon
- ✗ No published height range for the standard model
Widest published height range
3. Flexia Smart Reformer
Flexia publishes the widest height range of any machine here: it says the reformer "fits most body types 5'0 to 6'6"." NBC Select reports the same range and a 350-lb capacity.
- Size: 90 × 30 × 14 inches. It stores upright at 94 × 30 × 29.5 inches.
- Resistance: 5 springs with 4 tension levels and 48 adjustable settings, according to Flexia.
- Smart features: A built-in movement sensor.
- Warranty: 5-year limited.
The frame is shorter than the other picks, and Flexia doesn't publish a carriage length. If you're near the top of its range, ask Flexia for the carriage length before buying.
Pros
- ✓ Published fit up to 6'6"
- ✓ 350-lb capacity
- ✓ Stores upright
- ✓ Built-in movement sensor
Cons
- ✗ Shortest frame of our picks at 90 inches
- ✗ Carriage length not published
Best value long rail
4. AeroPilates Pro XP 557
The Pro XP 557 is the longest AeroPilates machine. Stamina lists it at 100.5 × 23.5 inches, with 69 inches of platform travel on extended aluminum rails, and says the extended rails make it "especially useful for taller practitioners."
- Frame: Non-folding, with an elevated 15-inch frame and rails 9 inches longer than other AeroPilates models, per Stamina.
- Resistance: 4 steel springs, per Stamina.
- Capacity: 300 lb.
- Footbar: Removable, adjusts to 3 positions, per Stamina.
- Warranty: 5 years on the frame, 90 days on parts.
Stamina doesn't publish a user height range. A Bed Bath & Beyond Q&A answer that appears to come from Stamina says it was "tested up to 6'4" with no restrictions," and Walmart lists 4.9 to 6.4 feet. We haven't confirmed either figure with Stamina. One retailer blog mentions a 6-inch extension for this model, but we found no such accessory on Stamina's page, so don't count on one.
Availability on Amazon varies, so check the seller and model number (XP 557) before you buy.
Pros
- ✓ Long rails with 69 inches of travel
- ✓ Elevated frame is easier to get on and off
- ✓ 300-lb capacity
- ✓ 5-year frame warranty
Cons
- ✗ Height range not published by Stamina
- ✗ Only 3 footbar positions
- ✗ Doesn't fold

Best folding option up to 6'4"
5. Align-Pilates F3 Folding Reformer
If you're tall and need to put the machine away, the F3 is the folding reformer with a published range that reaches 6'4". Pique Fitness lists it as fitting users "145cm – 193 cm (4'10" – 6'4")."
- Size: 95 inches long when open, with a 35-inch carriage.
- Resistance: 4 springs, with 4 footbar positions.
- Capacity: 120 kg (about 265 lb).
- Storage: Folds and stands about 57 inches tall.
For more folding machines, see our best foldable Pilates reformers.
Pros
- ✓ Published fit up to 6'4"
- ✓ Real springs on a folding frame
- ✓ Folds to about 57 inches tall
Cons
- ✗ Lower weight limit than other picks
- ✗ Not long enough for users above 6'4"
Long folding frame (per Forbes)
6. Faittd Foldable Pilates Reformer
Forbes Vetted reports that the Faittd foldable is 103 inches long, which makes it one of the longer folding frames we found. Forbes says tall users can use it, and also that some verified buyers report shorter users may not fit it well.
Faittd's own product page doesn't list dimensions, a height range or a weight limit. The figures here come from Forbes (which reports a 300-lb limit), not from the maker, so confirm them with the seller before buying.
Pros
- ✓ 103-inch frame, per Forbes
- ✓ Folds for storage
Cons
- ✗ No specs published by the maker
- ✗ Height range unverified
Also considered
- Balanced Body Studio Reformer (Stretch frame): Balanced Body offers a Stretch frame that's 6 inches longer than the standard Studio Reformer (92.62 inches long, 30.5-inch carriage without the headrest). It's configured to order by phone at extra cost, so we couldn't link a listing.
- Balanced Body Allegro 2: Our top home pick overall is 94 inches long with a carriage of 27.5 inches to the shoulder rests. Balanced Body itself says "taller and larger exercisers may want to use the Allegro Stretch."
- VEVOR S3003 (Advanced Version): VEVOR says it fits people under 2 meters (about 6'6"), with a 99-inch frame and a 400-lb limit. See our VEVOR Pilates reformer review for the full specs and caveats.
- Studio-grade machines: Studio-grade machines from Gratz and Peak Pilates also come up in tall-user guides, but we couldn't find maker-published height ranges, so they aren't ranked here.
- AeroPilates Reformer 287: At 85 inches extended, it's the shortest machine we looked at. Women's Health notes that AeroPilates says it fits people up to 6'4", and that even her 5'11" tester found her height was "pushing the machine's limits." Skip it if you're tall.
How to choose a reformer if you're tall
Frame length vs. carriage length
Tap the diagram to enlarge
Spec sheets mix up two numbers. Frame length is the whole machine end to end, roughly 85 to 111 inches across the machines here. Carriage length is the part you lie on, roughly 30 to 40 inches. The Allegro 2 shows why this matters: Balanced Body lists its carriage at 39.25 inches overall but 27.5 inches to the shoulder rests.
Compare like with like. A long frame helps leg work and travel. A long carriage (measured to the shoulder rests) matters most for a long torso.
Published height range (and when there isn't one)
Only some machines have a published range. Flexia lists 5'0" to 6'6", and retailer Pique Fitness lists the Align-Pilates F3 at 4'10" to 6'4". Balanced Body gives only a lower bound for the Allegro Stretch ("over 6'4"" on its product page, and 5'10" and up for extended frames in its buying guide). Merrithew (for the standard SPX Max Plus) and Stamina don't publish one on their product pages. If a number comes from a retailer or a listicle, treat it as a rough guide.
Footbar positions and adjustability
More footbar positions give you more ways to fit the machine to your legs. The Allegro Stretch has 5 locking positions, the SPX Max Plus and Align F3 have 4, and the Pro XP 557 has 3, according to the makers. Women's Health notes the AeroPilates 287's footbar "can't be adjusted for specific exercises."
Check extension options before you order
Merrithew says its 6-inch Extension Upgrade must be added at purchase and isn't available as a retrofit, and it doesn't fit Vertical Stand models. If you're close to 6'4", decide before you order. For other brands, ask the maker whether an extended frame exists.
Room space
Longer frames need longer rooms. The Allegro Stretch is 111 inches (about 9.25 feet) long, and Merrithew lists 102.5 inches on its SPX Max extension page. Leave extra room around the machine for standing work.
If you can, book a class on the same model at a local studio before you order. A $1,000+ machine is hard to return.
Tips if you're on a standard machine
The Pilates Encyclopedia blog suggests a few workarounds for tall clients:
- For short box work, put the box over the shoulder blocks instead of in front of them, and sit as far back as you can.
- On the Balanced Body Allegro 2, you can move the foot strap to the lower of its two holes for a little more length.
Frequently Asked Questions
What height is too tall for a standard Pilates reformer?
There's no single cutoff. Balanced Body's buying guide recommends extended frames like the Allegro Stretch for users 5'10" and above, and its Stretch page calls that machine perfect for users over 6'4", while Merrithew aims its 6-inch extension at users 6'4" and taller or with long torsos. Published ranges for specific machines top out at 6'4" (Align-Pilates F3, per retailer Pique Fitness) and 6'6" (Flexia).
Is there an extended-length reformer for tall people?
Yes. Balanced Body says the Allegro Stretch frame is 18 inches longer than the original Allegro, with a carriage 6 inches longer and 2 inches wider. Balanced Body also offers a Stretch frame for its Studio Reformer that's 6 inches longer, and Merrithew sells a 6-inch Extension Upgrade for SPX Max reformers.
Can tall people use a cheap reformer like the AeroPilates?
It depends on the model. Women's Health reports that even its 5'11" tester's height was "pushing the machine's limits" on the AeroPilates 287. Stamina says the longer Pro XP 557, with 69 inches of platform travel, is "especially useful for taller practitioners."
Is the Allegro 2 long enough for tall people?
Balanced Body lists the Allegro 2 at 94 inches with a carriage of 27.5 inches to the shoulder rests, and says taller and larger exercisers may want the Allegro Stretch instead. Some reviews say it fits up to 6'4", but Balanced Body doesn't publish a height range.
Can I add an extension to my reformer later?
Not on Merrithew machines. Merrithew says its Extension Upgrade must be added when you buy the reformer and isn't available as a retrofit, and it doesn't fit models with the Vertical Stand. For other brands, check with the maker.
What length reformer do I need if I'm over 6 feet?
Makers don't publish a height-to-length formula. Among machines with published fits, the 95-inch Align-Pilates F3 is listed up to 6'4" (per Pique Fitness) and the 90-inch Flexia up to 6'6" (per Flexia), so carriage design matters as much as frame length. For 6'4" and up, the Allegro Stretch (111 in) or an SPX Max with Merrithew's extension (102.5 in, per its extension page) are the purpose-built options.
How much room does a long reformer need?
Balanced Body lists the Allegro Stretch frame at 111 inches, and Merrithew lists 102.5 inches on its SPX Max extension page. Add space for standing work around the machine.
The verdict
Our picks by need, based on the published specs above:
- Most tall buyers with room for a 9-foot machine: The Balanced Body Allegro Stretch, the longest frame here, with a carriage 6 inches longer than the original Allegro's.
- You want a published height guarantee and upright storage: The Flexia Smart Reformer (5'0" to 6'6", per Flexia). Its 90-inch frame is the shortest here, so check the carriage length with Flexia if you're near the top of its range.
- 6'4" and up and prefer Merrithew: The SPX Max Plus, with the 6-inch Extension Upgrade ordered at purchase.
- Need to fold it, up to 6'4": The Align-Pilates F3.
- Lower budget: The AeroPilates Pro XP 557 has 69 inches of platform travel. Stamina doesn't publish a height range, though.
Need to fold it away? Start with the Align-Pilates F3. For a wider look at home machines, see our best home Pilates reformers or browse all home reformers.
