Pilates is low-impact, but finding the best sports bra for Pilates is harder than it sounds. In one class you roll down through your spine, twist, go upside down and spend long stretches lying on your back. As Club Pilates instructor Kate Snyder puts it, "you'll work every plane of your body along with bending, twisting, and flexing the spine."
The right bra isn't the most supportive one. It's the one that stays put without straps, clasps or pads digging in. Our sources lean toward light to medium support with soft straps, and a fitted top with a built-in bra is a fair alternative if you'd rather skip a separate bra.
How we chose:
- Shortlist: bras and tops recommended for Pilates by instructors in ELLE, Club Pilates and NBC Select, plus well-reviewed light- and medium-support styles with Pilates-friendly designs. Popular studio brands such as lululemon and Alo aren't here because we couldn't verify their product pages or find them in our Pilates sources.
- Verification: support level, straps and back design, coverage, padding, fabric and size range checked on each brand's product page. Where a spec couldn't be confirmed, we say so.
- Fit guidance: cross-checked against published research on bra fit, such as McGhee and Steele (2010).
We don't test products in-house, and we couldn't find a reputable outlet that has tested sports bras for Pilates specifically. We also found no study of bras during Pilates; the research we cite looks at exercise in general, mostly running.
Do you need a sports bra for Pilates?
Not strictly. Instructors quoted by ELLE and Club Pilates prefer medium support, and Under Armour suggests a low-impact bra, so light to medium covers it. Under Armour also notes that Pilates tops often come with a built-in bra, which works as a one-layer alternative.
If you have a larger cup size, you may get more hold from a separate bra. That's our reading of fit research in runners, not a Pilates finding: studies found fit problems were more common in larger-breasted runners, and that a supportive bra cut discomfort in large-breasted women.

The best sports bras for Pilates
Best Overall
1. Beyond Yoga Spacedye Slim Racerback Bra
ELLE picked the Spacedye Slim Racerback in its Pilates outfit guide. It calls it a simple, classic bra, notes that "too many straps or cutouts can be a hassle," and quotes a reviewer who called it "perfect for Pilates." Beyond Yoga rates it medium support and says it's made for "active moments, but also your day off," in fabric that "never digs in or restricts movement."
- Fabric: 87% polyester / 13% elastane, four-way stretch and moisture-wicking, per Beyond Yoga
- Support: no padding; a self-lined shelf with a chest band instead
- Back: skinny racerback with a keyhole
- Sizes: XXS–XXL plus 1X–4X
- Ratings: 4.66 out of 5 from about 1,450 reviews on Beyond Yoga's site as of October 2026
No pads means nothing to shift or bunch when you roll down. Beyond Yoga's review summary notes that some buyers find the straps too thin, which, in our view, may matter more if you have a larger cup size. We couldn't confirm an Amazon listing, so the link goes to Beyond Yoga.
Pros
- ✓ Medium support, the level ELLE's expert prefers for Pilates
- ✓ Simple racerback with no adjustable hardware
- ✓ Extended sizes up to 4X
Cons
- ✗ Some buyers find the straps too thin, per Beyond Yoga's review summary
- ✗ No padding, if you like a molded look
- ✗ Amazon availability unconfirmed
Instructor Pick
2. Nike Swoosh Women's Medium-Support Padded Sports Bra
Club Pilates lead instructor Amanda Duckstein recommended the Nike Pro Swoosh Medium-Support bra in a 2021 studio post: "The [brand] calls it medium support, but it holds my chest in comfortably without cutting me off in bad spots." Nike now sells the Swoosh Medium-Support Padded Sports Bra. We couldn't confirm that it's the same design she wore, so treat it as the current version of her pick.
- Fabric: 72% polyester / 28% spandex body with mesh lining and Nike's Dri-FIT sweat-wicking, per Nike
- Pads: sewn-in, which Nike says "stay in place"
- Fit: tight
- Sizes: not shown on the page we checked; see Nike's size chart
Sewn-in pads won't migrate during inversions the way loose inserts can. If you'd rather have no pads at all, Nike also sells a non-padded version.
Pros
- ✓ Recommended for Pilates by a Club Pilates instructor
- ✓ Sewn-in pads stay put
- ✓ Under $50
Cons
- ✗ Unconfirmed that it's the exact model the instructor wore
- ✗ Size range not confirmed
- ✗ Club Pilates' post is studio content, not an independent review
Best Longline
3. Girlfriend Collective Paloma Racerback Bra
The Paloma is a longline racerback that Girlfriend Collective says is "designed for medium impact activities." The longer band may give more coverage when you're folded forward or upside down, and it ties with the Dylan for the widest size range on this list (XXS–6XL).
- Fabric: 79% recycled polyester / 21% spandex, compressive and double-lined, per Girlfriend Collective
- Design: scoop neck, racerback, built-in support band
- Sizes: XXS–6XL
- Ratings: 4.8 out of 5 from about 15,000 reviews on the brand's site as of October 2026
- Certification: OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Girlfriend Collective doesn't mention removable cups, so check the listing if you want them. We also couldn't confirm an Amazon listing for this bra.
Pros
- ✓ Sizes XXS–6XL
- ✓ Longline band adds coverage
- ✓ Large number of high brand-site ratings
Cons
- ✗ Compressive fabric may feel snug for low-impact work
- ✗ Removable cups not mentioned
- ✗ Amazon availability unconfirmed
Best Light Support
4. Nike Indy Light Support Women's Padded Adjustable Sports Bra
If you want the least restriction, Nike describes the Indy Light Support as "a soft hug with plenty of freedom." It's a pull-over style with removable pads and adjustable straps.
- Fabric: about 78–79% polyester / 21–22% spandex body, per Nike
- Pads: removable
- Straps: thin, adjustable at the back
- Sizes: XXS–XXL, with a separate plus-size listing
- Ratings: about 440 reviews on Nike's site as of October 2026, labeled "Highly Rated"
One thing to consider for reformer classes: the strap adjusters sit on the back. No source we found says that's a problem, but if you're sensitive to anything pressing into you when you lie on the carriage, check where they fall before class.
Pros
- ✓ Lightest support on the list for maximum freedom
- ✓ Adjustable straps and removable pads
- ✓ Under $50, with plus sizes
Cons
- ✗ Light support may not be enough for larger cup sizes
- ✗ Strap adjusters sit on the back
Best Budget
5. CRZ YOGA Butterluxe Adjustable Spaghetti Strap Bra
CRZ YOGA's Butterluxe bra uses the same soft fabric as its Butterluxe leggings, a budget pick in our Pilates leggings guide. CRZ lists it as "Design for yoga," says it's "intended for low impact activities," and rates it light support.
- Fabric: 81% polyamide / 19% Lycra, per CRZ YOGA
- Pads: removable
- Design: adjustable spaghetti straps, scoop neck, U back
- Sizes: XXS–XL, per the size options on CRZ's page
- Colors: 20+
- Reviews: about 110 on CRZ's site as of October 2026 (we couldn't see the star rating)
CRZ YOGA sells on Amazon, but we haven't confirmed this bra's listing there, so the link searches Amazon.
Pros
- ✓ Under $50
- ✓ Made for low-impact work like yoga and Pilates
- ✓ Adjustable straps and removable pads
Cons
- ✗ Light support only
- ✗ Sizes stop at XL
- ✗ Thin straps put more weight on a small area
Most Coverage
6. Girlfriend Collective Dylan Tank Bra
The Dylan is a tank-length bra with a high neck and racerback that Girlfriend Collective says gives "full coverage." That makes it a good fit for inversions and roll-downs, when a scoop-neck bra can gape.
- Fabric: 79% recycled polyester / 21% spandex, compressive and double-lined
- Length: 14 inches (S) to 16 inches (XXL) from the shoulder, per the brand
- Sizes: XXS–6XL
- Ratings: 4.7 out of 5 from about 7,200 reviews on the brand's site, with 94% recommending it, as of October 2026
Girlfriend Collective rates it for "medium to high impact," which is more support than our Pilates sources call for. Choose it for coverage, not because Pilates needs that much hold.
Pros
- ✓ High neck and tank length for full coverage
- ✓ Sizes XXS–6XL
- ✓ Works as a top on its own
Cons
- ✗ More support than Pilates typically needs
- ✗ Compressive fabric can run warm
- ✗ Amazon availability unconfirmed
The best Pilates tops with a built-in bra
Any fitted tank, tee or long-sleeve that doesn't ride up when you're upside down works. Under Armour, which sells Pilates apparel, says "it's best to wear fitted tops to Pilates because the excess fabric of looser tops may get in the way during exercises," and that Pilates tops are designed to be "lightweight and breathable, with features like built-in bras and mesh panels for ventilation."
Instructors interviewed by NBC Select agree: "Form-fitting clothing helps instructors see your body and correct your form more accurately." Nofar Hagag, founder of the Nofar Method, told ELLE that a snug fit matters because she doesn't want "anything loose getting in the way or shifting during a session," and that fitted pieces make it easier for instructors to check alignment. Our own tip: skip loose hems that can flip over your face during roll-overs.
If you'd rather wear one layer, these two tops have the bra built in. For fitted tees, tanks and long-sleeves to wear over a bra, see what to wear to Pilates.
Best Budget Top With Built-In Bra
7. CRZ YOGA Butterluxe Twist Cross Back Built in Bra Tank
CRZ YOGA's Butterluxe tank has a light-support built-in bra and says it's "designed for yoga and lounge." CRZ's product page says it's sold on Amazon.
- Fabric: 81% polyamide / 19% Lycra
- Bra: built in, with removable pads
- Design: adjustable spaghetti straps, twisted criss-cross back, U-neck
- Sizes: XXS–XL
- Reviews: only 12 on CRZ's site as of October 2026
It's fitted, which instructors prefer, but the size range is narrow and there's little review history yet.
Pros
- ✓ Under $50
- ✓ One layer instead of bra plus top
- ✓ Removable pads
Cons
- ✗ Light support only
- ✗ Sizes stop at XL
- ✗ Few reviews so far
Built-In Bra, Extended Sizes
8. SPANX BoostUp V-Neck Shelf Tank
The SPANX BoostUp V-Neck Shelf Tank has an adjustable built-in shelf bra with removable cups, in sizes XS–3X.
- Fabric: SPANX's FlexAppeal, four-way stretch, sweat-wicking and quick-drying
- Ventilation: mesh back panel
- Sizes: XS–3X
- Ratings: 4.3 out of 5 from 50 reviews on SPANX's site; a reviewer noted it runs slightly short
Its $50–100 tier is based on the list price. It was on final sale when we checked in October 2026, so the price you see may be lower and stock may be limited. ELLE recommended a different SPANX shelf tank, the Contour Crossback, which we couldn't find on SPANX's site.
Pros
- ✓ Adjustable shelf bra with removable cups
- ✓ Sizes up to 3X
- ✓ Mesh back for ventilation
Cons
- ✗ Runs slightly short, per a reviewer
- ✗ Final sale at time of writing; stock may be thin
- ✗ Sold by SPANX; Amazon availability unconfirmed

Support level: light to medium
Our sources don't agree on one level. Hagag told ELLE she prefers "medium support with soft, flexible straps that won't dig in," adding: "Comfort and freedom of movement are key." Under Armour (a brand that sells sports bras) recommends "a low-impact sports bra with a wide band and adjustable straps that provides support and comfort without restricting your movement," in "moisture-wicking fabric."
In practice, light to medium works, and the right pick depends mostly on comfort and cup size. Studies of runners found fit problems were more common in larger-breasted women, and a small study found a lift-and-compress bra reduced discomfort in large-breasted women, so if you have a larger cup size you may prefer the medium end. Neither study looked at Pilates.
Straps and back
Look for soft, flat straps. Hagag's main ask is straps that "won't dig in," and Duckstein praised her Nike bra for not "cutting me off in bad spots."
On the reformer you spend a lot of time lying on the carriage, so it's worth thinking about what's on your back. This is our own tip, not a sourced finding: a hook-and-eye clasp or bulky strap sliders between your shoulder blades may press into you when you're lying down. Pull-over styles with a plain racerback avoid the question.

Best sports bra for reformer Pilates: flat back, no metal hardware
Balanced Body, which makes reformers, says to avoid clothing with exposed zippers, metal rivets or plastic buttons because they can tear or puncture the upholstery. Most sports bras don't have these, but check for decorative zips or metal trims. Pair that with a flat, pull-over back (see the strap tips above). On this list, the Beyond Yoga Spacedye and Girlfriend Collective Paloma have pull-over racerbacks with no back hardware. The Nike Indy's strap adjusters sit on the back. If it's your first time on the machine, see what to expect in your first reformer Pilates class.
Coverage for inversions
Roll-downs, roll-overs and inversions are where a low scoop neck can gape. Longline styles like the Girlfriend Collective Paloma and high-neck styles like the Dylan Tank Bra add coverage.
Pads: sewn-in, removable or none
- None: nothing to shift, like the Beyond Yoga Spacedye.
- Sewn-in: stay in place, as Nike says of the Swoosh.
- Removable: flexible, but loose inserts can move. The Nike Indy and both CRZ YOGA picks have them.
Fit matters more than brand
Fit problems are common. In a study of 104 women, McGhee and Steele (2010) found 85% were wearing ill-fitting bras and recommended professional bra-fitting education. In a survey of 1,285 London Marathon runners, 75% reported bra fit issues, mostly chafing and shoulder-strap discomfort, more often among larger-breasted runners.
A small study of 20 large-breasted women found that a bra designed to lift and compress the breasts reduced breast and bra discomfort during exercise compared with standard sports bras. A 2026 perspective article in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living argues that well-fitted sports bras can reduce breast movement and exercise-related breast pain. Keep in mind that all of this research involved running, jumping or general activity, not Pilates.
The basics:
- Band: snug and level
- Straps: don't dig in
- Cups: don't gape when you fold forward
A professional fitting can help if you're unsure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a sports bra for Pilates?
It isn't required. Nofar Hagag told ELLE she prefers medium support with soft straps, and Under Armour recommends a low-impact bra with a wide band. A fitted top with a built-in bra is a common alternative, though if you have a larger cup size you may get more hold from a separate bra, based on fit research in runners.
What support level is best for Pilates?
Light to medium. Under Armour recommends a low-impact bra with a wide band and adjustable straps, while Hagag told ELLE she prefers medium support. A Club Pilates instructor wears a medium-support Nike bra that she says holds her chest in comfortably without cutting her off in bad spots.
What's the best sports bra for reformer Pilates?
Look for soft, flat straps and a back without bulky hardware, since you spend time lying on the carriage. Balanced Body advises against metal or plastic hardware that could damage the upholstery. A longline or high-neck style, like the Girlfriend Collective Paloma or Dylan Tank Bra, adds coverage during inversions. The point about back clasps is our own tip, not a sourced finding.
What tops are best for Pilates?
Fitted ones. Under Armour says loose tops may get in the way and that Pilates tops are designed to be lightweight and breathable, often with built-in bras or mesh panels. Instructors told NBC Select and ELLE that fitted clothing helps them check your form.
What should I wear over a sports bra for Pilates?
A fitted tank, tee or long-sleeve. Under Armour says loose tops may get in the way during exercises, and instructors told NBC Select that form-fitting clothing helps them see your body and correct your form.
How should a sports bra fit?
The band should be snug, the straps shouldn't dig in and the cups shouldn't gape. Poor fit is common: one study found 85% of 104 women wore ill-fitting bras, and 75% of surveyed marathon runners reported fit issues. A professional fitting can help.
The verdict
For most people, the Beyond Yoga Spacedye Slim Racerback is the safest choice: medium support, no pads to shift and sizes up to 4X. If you want an instructor-backed option under $50, the Nike Swoosh Medium-Support is the current version of a Club Pilates instructor's pick. On a tight budget, the CRZ YOGA Butterluxe bra is light and adjustable. If you want the least restriction and have a smaller cup size, the Nike Indy Light Support has removable pads and comes in plus sizes. If you have a larger cup size, start at the medium end: the Girlfriend Collective Paloma is rated for medium impact, has a longline support band and comes in sizes to 6XL, and Beyond Yoga's review summary notes some buyers find the Spacedye's straps too thin.
Check price at Beyond Yoga Check price on AmazonIf coverage during inversions matters most, go longline with the Girlfriend Collective Paloma or high-neck with the Dylan Tank Bra, both in sizes up to 6XL. To skip the separate bra, the CRZ YOGA Butterluxe tank is the budget option and the SPANX BoostUp Shelf Tank covers sizes up to 3X.
